I picked up an axle out of a burnt up van the gear oil smelled really bad (like burnt gear oil )
I left the axle in the garage after draining all the oil and it stunk up the whole house.

Does anyone know how I can clean this axle to get rid of the smell please help or my wife is making me get rid of it 60ff 35 spline

First off, if you want to keep it make a worse smell to take her mind off of it

Otherwise, burned up gear oil is a hard smell to get rid of. You're best bet would be to flush it out with some kind of degreaser or something that will get out most of the old gear oil. Bottle up the crud left over and make sure to cap it off. If that doesn't work, try that febreeze crap or whatever it's called. Good luck and good find at the junkyard.

hahahahhaa, I know the feeling! Try having a 9 month pregnant wife at home who's senses are trippled, at home. I had three axles in the garage last week and they all stunk to hell. She says she has to hold her nose, from the time she get's her Jeep in the garage till she's in the house.

I would just go get three cans of Brake cleaner and clean the crap out of the housing as good as possible. Get the the axle cleaned up quickly and maybe even do a quick rattle can paint job on it. Then get a new gasket and seal it up tightly, then you can fill it later and it will help keep the smell from getting out. Plus, the smell of the paint will help cover up the lovely toasted gear oil smell. You can kill two birds with one stone .
Nice score on the 35 spliner!!!

What sw99 said. The only way to get rid of that smell is to get the source out of the house, then air out the house. Get it done quick though, or that sulfur smell will soak into carpets and drapes and you'll smell it for weeks.

citrus degreaser worked for getting the smell out of the carpet in the truck after I spilled gear oil on it. now it just smells like gasoline and oranges.
