Still trying to get Teller County to take over for the Forest Service. The Forest Service is in the process of GPSing the area that will be used in Teller County. Predator has all the info on this.

If the Forest Service keeps control of it, then it will stay closed. Teller County wants to take over so they can get the off-road crowd's $. They have a lot of hoops to jump through to make this happen. You can stop in at Predator to see what you can do to help.

Longwater is not open. There are signs, but I'm guessing that someone has torn them down. Please tell everyone you know that the trails are closed! If people keep running the trails then they risk them being closed permanently. There has been alot of work put into getting these trails open again and it will be risked if people keep running them.

But After the river; the trail to the right is closed at the top, we found out the hard way. there are no signs and any barriers have be removed. Didn't have time to put anything back.

They are all STILL CLOSED!!! The signs are continually being removed. We've had this posted a couple of times now. We're going to lose them permanently if people don't stay off them
2Toys... Not pointing this at you. Pointing it at the asses that keep removing the signs.

The district ranger was out today, so no one had a definite answer. The Springs FS office was going to have to check as well. They are going to get back to me tomorrow.

I checked with the forest serv a couple weeks ago. The trails are still closed, they said they,ve had trouble with people removing the signs. They are also doing some logging along the trail, could be another reason for the signs being down. But it is still closed.

I had to go to Divide today to pick up my son from my Moms house today, so I descided to run over to the trail heads to see what was up. As I pulled up a couple of guys were heading down the trail in a Rubicon so I stopped to take a look. About 30 feet off of the trail I found the "NO MOTORIZED VEHICLES" sign lying facedown under some brush. The base of it had been shot several times so it could be removed. I placed it back up by the metal trail sign, but it will be easy to remove again(I only had some bailing wire). It looks like the logging company is using both Longwater and Metberry trails to clear the burnt timber, making it look as if it is open. I am going to call tomorrow to see if the Forest service can get a new sign up there.

The local office got back with me..
The trail had been opened for a timber sale, and when timber guys were done they were to replace the signs. Either they didn't replace the signs or some asshat shot it off.. They are going to do a sweep and close the trail, I assume they are going to trench it like they did Hackett.

I spoke to the Forest Service a few weeks ago, and they said that they are all still closed, but there's a chance they could open up next year, but in all likelihood, it will be 2007 before they open hackett and longwater. I believe that they decided to permanently close metberry.

Jerry Panek of Predator in the Springs was at the State Assoc meeting in the Springs on Jul 16. He gave a briefing on the status of the trails in Wildcat Canyon - Metberry, Longwater, etc. As has been stated herein - THE TRAILS ARE CLOSED to the general public. There is a logging operation ongoing.
Possibly, within several months, we will be able to construct the gates to keep anyone other than those working on the trails OUT. Metberry will be the first trail to be worked on, as it has had extensive work done prior to the Hayman fire.
There are alot of agreements to be hammered out yet.Teller County has been very diligent about what they said they were going to do. The agreements are necessary because of the trials themselves. If a trail goes from Teller into say, Douglas County. then an agreement between the two counties is necessary. If the trail goes back into Teller, then the agreement is somewhat different. I'm not up on all the legalese involved, but that is what is going on right now.
Our job will begin when all the agreements are approved by the FS, First, obviously, is the gate construction, per the agreement. Then, actual work on the trails can commence. Within the agreements will be the requirements for volunteers as to what they can do and cannot do. Classes will be held for certification in chain saw operation, water bar construction, etc. I know this seems redundant to folks who have cut up probably several hundreds of cords of wood, as I have, but, remember we're dealing with the Feds and the Feds run on regulation.
Until this all transpires, PLEASE stay off these trails and discourage anyone whom you hear may want to be using these trails. A small minority is all it takes to destroy what alll the rest of us have been working so long and hard for.
Thanks for reading.
