Tacoma Longbed Wheelbase

Hey Guys, so I am thinking about getting a new truck, I dont do any really really gnarly trails ever, but like to get on the trails for camping and fishing etc. I have been driving a small 95 nissan pickup the last 5 years, the thing is perfect and has gone up some stuff that it probably shouldnt have but I am just looking for something nicer with more room. Anyways I am thinking about getting 06 tacoma double cab - long bed, with the Long bed the truck is alot larger the wheelbase is 140" and the overall lenght is 221". With having no real experience with the much larger truck on the trails I am looking for some feedback from folks with larger stock trucks and on trails in colorado. Obviously some trails here are pretty tight and many tight turns I'm thinking the large truck may be a bitch on some trails and maybe I should just bail on the double cad idea. Oh yeah, the long bed is about 14" longer than the short bed double cabs. Thanks for any info.

My brother has a Dodge 2500 shortbed quadcab (not megacab) and we've taken that over Red Cone, with some multi-point turns in the trees. I've also taken a newer version of the same truck over some decent trails. Take your time, and it should be fine.

Why are you looking at the long bed vs. short bed?

Well I kind of want the 4 door double cab, I plan on having the truck for a long time, so who knows in 4 years I may need the extra seating or larger, the ext cab is just so small for passengers. With the double cab short bed the bed is just to small also, I couldnt even camp in the back, and I dont know how much gear I could fit in there. also with my job in a yaer or so I would need a larger bed also. Thanks for the input, I am pretty suer with the long wheelbase I would be good...just may need to put a nice skid plate under there.

Fair enough. Just wondering. If I didn't have my XJ, I would for sure have a Tacoma.

Good tires, skid plates, and maybe a mild lift and you'd be set

We have I think 2 people with the DC long bed. The turning radius isn't as much of a problem as the breakover angle. Also, I don't believe the long bed is available with the elocker.

On the other hand, we have several people with the regular bed double cab. Some of them camp in the back - with the tailgate down, there is plenty of room.

For what you've posted so far, I don't see any need for the long bed. The regular bed will be a lot more available.

Check out www.ttora.com for all things Tacoma.

Get the TRD package so you have the rear e-locker, do the "grey wire mod" and wheel the piss out of it

To clarify - TRD Offroad has the elocker, TRD Sport has a LSD. I don't think the longbed is available with TRD Offroad, only Sport.

The grey wire mod allows you to engage the locker in 2HI or 4HI, not just 4LO.

how hard of trails? if it's just camping, wheeling, etc... this would be a good rig, what was the hardest trail you ran in the nissan? if your gonna mod and want to do harder stuff than you did in your other rig then i would look for pre 05 style taco, just smaller and shorter, you would still have room if you a got a double cab as well( kid plans and all...), not much bed on those style tacos though, i'm not a big fan of the larger taco, just my 2 cents, good luck on your purchase
