Had a great time guys! We did this trail a few weeks ago in our KJ's when it was hailing and snowing. It was more challenging trying to go up it back then. I was glad to try it with the sun shining and drier.
I was in the Light Khaki KJ. The blue KJ was Joel.

i cant emphasize enuff, that road(dakan mt rd) is the trail, and NOTHING else is. all the spur roads you passed today used to be open, and i have been on all of them before they were closed.
and at the area with the rocks, all of that except the part which is the road,is off trail and not a part of the road.Rampart Range is one of the most heavily used/abused public lands in the area far more than carnage boulder.and the results are all the trail closures in RR.
it has been heavily used for 35+ years, and i have seen roads there closed in the 70's that have never ever been re opened.
stay on the trail and take some trash out with you.if you are on the rocks, you are OFF THE TRAIL.
i have been going there since 87 or 89,might have even been there in 86 but not sure.
some on colo 4x4 think i am full of it,but take this to heart--i "wheeled" there in my chevette, all of my VW bugs.i know that area like my own back yard,i know what is and is not trail up there, and what is and is not a shared road, and some of you got off the road today.if you are not helping and following the rules, you are part of the problem.
stay on the trail!!!!

an idea
how do you get the FS to open some new challenging areas in RR?
there is a LOT of land and areas already with roads and trails,so no new road making will be needed.
the location could take some stress off some other areas as well.

I'm heading up there next weekend. Should be fun in a stocker.
On another note, stay the trail! If you want to go play on rocks, go to a trail that has rocks - PLEASE!The good old days-

These 2 are questionable?
I know this area very well, this is by the overlook before Dakan & Jackson Creek split, this looks like another line that has been created in the last few years, I have never got an real answer from the ranger dist. but I just go stick to the well traveled route. The other rock pics look like they are @ a camp site I've stayed @ many times & never been hassled for flexing on the rocks @ camp.
But hey WTF do I know, I'm just an old guy?

I've wheeled to many IFS's to blame it on a "jeep wave". But it looks like the KJ does pretty well in this department.

I saw a ZJ take the same line three weeks ago and they were on three wheels. Unfortunately, the only other rig I saw take this line during this trip was on 35"+ tires and thats apples and oranges...guess we'll never know.
Edit: Here's the Grand going in the opposite direction through the same trench...
Definitely a non-IFS induced Jeep Wave there.Last edited by Skyjump136; May 27th, 2007 at 08:54 AM.

Ever try the search freature next to new posts @ the top of the screen?
It works wonders sometimes!
Don't go alone.
from sedalia...
take hwy 67 to hwy 105 (about a half mile west of sedalia)
south on 105 to jackson creek road
go west up jackson creek road...
you will make a long windy climb up to a flat point that has a steep downhill road to the left, that's hidden valley road.
if you keep following jackson creek road up, it ends up on rampart...

I'd agree with that, especially when you consider why making your own trail is such a bad idea. The vegetation never grows back.
I don't doubt what you said about the rocks being off limits since I don't really know the area, but, being right next to the road, the rocks sure seem like an ideal area to be a legal obstacle.
