It was "one of those days" on Spring Creek. . .

The Calvary 4Wheelers hit Spring Creek again this year. Lots of nice people out on the trail, and we ran into some folks from Mile High again (nice Scrambler, by the way! ). Normally trail damage is limited to someone breaking a bead, tearing a sidewall, or busting the occasional u-joint or drive shaft - BUT NOT THIS DAY. Despite the absolutely beautiful weather and conditions, we saw more people tear up their junk before dinner than I ever thought I'd see in an entire season of wheeling!

The first serious carnage happened at The Wall. One of our cardinal rules of having one spotter (chosen by the driver) was broken, and we had like 2 or 3 people trying to give advice. As a result, Brian landed his XJ on its side. Fortunately he had spare u-joints, so he was able to get off the trail (but no spare rear passenger door/glass):

The next one was just spooky. Josh had practically conquered The Wall when his engine stalled. He started it back up to nudge himself up the final couple of inches, when all of a sudden he slipped out of gear. The rpm's went WAY up (I still can't believe he didn't throw a rod) and he went FLYING back down that hill so fast. . .we're just glad that tree was there, and that he didn't break his neck:

Right before the next obstacle, James' steering started acting up. One look underneath, and the problem was revealed - amazing how those steering box bolts will work themselves loose:

I didn't see the next one, but I heard from Bill that one of the guys that got stuck behind our large group, who had been pretty patient with us most of the day, decided to start making his way around everyone because he had to get to work - he got a little careless, and ended up on his top:

Not long after that I ended up hitting my tie rod (something which has become so cliche' since I got my "low steer" setup from ORO - though this time it probably kept me from bending the axle housing). Josh made a spot I got hung up on last year look SO easy. . .so without getting out, or taking a spot, I figured I'd take it on (we were done with tough part on the Rock Garden anyway, right? ):

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL. James and Bill, after locating some steering box bolts, still had to head up the mountain to get James' XJ. On the way back down, in a rush to get to Beau Jo's, someone took a VERY BAD LINE:

Needless to say, though certainly not the toughest trail we've done, it was by far the most costly. Fortunately, other than some minor whiplash and damaged pride, the drivers were remarkably unscathed. It was a wake-up call to all of us, that's for sure. Never rush through a trail, plan your lines carefully, and have a single trusted spotter. If you don't feel safe doing something, there's no shame in taking a strap or backing off altogether.

Hummm? Was this today or yesterday Stan? I was supposed to be up there today with Al (DaJuge) & a few others. Something came up yesterday I had to take care of today so no go. It sounds like it was one of "those" days though.

We went up on Saturday, and we even split the group up. Half went to Ute Creek, and the other half (there were about 10 rigs) did Spring Creek.

I was still burning off excess adrenaline from Moab from when I almost rolled it on Rusty Nail two weeks ago - so my nervous system was pretty much fried after I saw the first tip-over at 10AM!! WAY too stressful. Wheeling is supposed to be FUN.

How in the hell do you do all that on Spring Creek? Looks like some of you have been following Wally's wheeling advice!

I heard that trail was an easy one...slightly easier than Holy Cross. Is it?

It can be very easy if you want it to be. You don't have to do that first obstacle at all. seems like there are a lot of flops right there though.

Blew my mind too. We've come close to tipping a couple of times over the years, but never actually had a rollover. I think it was just a combination of having too many people in the group, a lot of people being in a hurry, some bad luck (popping out of gear), and carelessness. It was just WEIRD to see two rollovers in our group and another guy do the same.

I think Holy Cross is tougher, though the real challenging obstacle for non-buggied rigs below the city has a bypass and there is an "easy line" at French Creek if you stay to the left. Above the city, particularly if it is wet, is trickier than Spring Creek. Quite frankly, the only thing that had worried me at Spring Creek was The Wall just because you can get pretty off-camber. I never expected THIS.

Yes Spring Creek is significantly easier to run than Holy Cross, which in and of itself, isnt horrible. It is my favorite trail in the state. Challenging, scenic and fun!

    Better luck next time!

I love how trails/obsticles take on names. The "Wall" used to just be the tree. Before that was cut down. When I first did Spring creek back in 2000, the "tree/wall" was nothing. In fact, you went way up on the left side, away from the "tree" if you wanted a hard line. And that was only slighty off camber. Now it looks like someone came in with a front loader and dug a hole!

It really is amazing how much erosion there has been. I'm sure it will be even more dug out next year!

Here's a little better shot of the Yota on its lid:

And... By finely developing the mental discipline of telekenisis, James is now able to travese even the narrowest of shelf roads!

But there were some things to enjoy about the day as well:

Nothin' fancy, just plain ol' me.

    Stan,

Looks like a tough day on the trail. I'm glad everyone walked away with only some damage to the rigs.

We did Spring creek as our last run last fall, just as a snow storm was coming in. It was raining hard at the wall, and the tree put a small dent in my jeep right by the rear tail light. I decided to take my son Justin more to the left which gave him enough momentum to smash the rear window and put a large dent in his rear quarter panel.

By the time we hit the rock garden it was snowing like crazy, and I cut the sidewall on a tire. It wasn't fun changing it there in the snow. In the slick snow I slid off the trail into a ditch and got very tippy, and we had to winch my Jeep out.

I definately want to re-run it this summer because I felt like SC had kind of kicked our ass.

We definitely were fortunate (relatively speaking)!

BTW, did you and Justin make it up to Chinaman's with the MallCrawlin group?

How did James roll the XJ? (As the previous owner of the XJ, it is wierd to see it on it's side)

What was the damage to it?

I can't believe the bolts came out. They were locktighted when installed. Crazy.

    Stan,

We didn't make OCG last weekend. Justin's rig has basically been in the tranny shop since Moab. First a week in Grand Junction and now a couple of days in Greely. They finally had to tear the whole thing down again.

We did run Ironclads/Planecrash (from the new Well's book) and MSV/Coney last Friday. But when Justin got home the Jeep left a huge tranny fluid spot in the driveway. Assuming everything goes well today we'll be looking to run Wheeler Lake with Keith and John Sunday or Monday. I can't wait.

I can not believe the carnage on Spring Creek, that trail must have changed since I went last year. When I went up i walked the whole thing. Now all this carnage WOW!

Bill, Are you the person that sends out the emails for Calvary 4X4?

I didn't see it, but I heard that he was coming down after getting the steering box bolts in, headed to Beau Jo's. Just a bad line, stayed too far to the inside of the turn, and laid it right down on its side.

James, what was the final damage?

    Scamper,

Just an idea for you on your tie rod... I have regular steer on my Scrambler (cant afford the costly high steer, any one here man them themselfs?) as well and have bent both my primary and back up tie rod many times. Finally after I straitened them last I welded on a long length of 1in angle iron at a down angle, now I bounce it off everything and it has not bent again at all. Heck after you paint it it doesn't even look half bad, but very, very effective. Thought I'd toss it out there for ya.

That's how I repaired tie rods out on the trail... I carried several pieces of 1" angle and weld them overtop a break or as reinforcement for a badly bent spot roughly straightened up with a winch. Very effective.
