Bunce School Road 5-29-06

Pittsburg & I talked about going up to Bunce School Road to test out his new YJ-link lift & since Patrick is going to be in N.H. for the summer we wanted to get him out one more time so we decided on BSR because it is close.
While we were airing down Ray pulled up and asked if he could join us, which was fine with us so we had "THEEEEEE PURPLE" Explorer, Pittsburg in his Sami, Patrick is his "PROWLER ORANGE" Sami & Ray with his Grand Cherokee.
It's not a hard trail but for a Sami with 1.3 and 33"s it makes for burning the clutch a little and it was Patrick's second time wheeling with his Sami and even though Ray had a very capable vehicle it is new to him so he was just getting used to off-roading. Had a great time and the weather couldn't have been better. Thanks Pittsburg for going, we will have to do it again.....

This was my first outing with the Samurai since I got the suspension and tires done, and I really appreciate Perry and his family for taking me on my first trail ride with my new toy I was glad Patrick was there with his Samurai to it was nice to have another Sami along.here is another link with some poser pics of me trying out my YJ Springs

did you happen to go to the top and then come back down cave creek? There would have been a gate at the bottom(if it hasn't been torn down). That is a nice little trail and some good bouldering for climbing.

Not sure what your talking about, but we did do the one loop that is not to far in from the school side, you make a right at like the little clearing. I know there are some big rocks that people have been climbing right there, which is fun to go to the to other side and climb it and stand at the top and watch them come up the hard way.

Pretty much the right place. When you make the right turn and is heads back NE towards Allens and you pass little camp sights and places the Rock climbing/bouldering groups hang out. The trail goes to the top of the cliffs that look towards the West. Then you start down the little creek. That is cave creek. Small two track heads down on the West side of the cliffs and back to the main Bunce Bus School road. Someone just bought the bottom part of cave creek and stuck up a gate with a nice new lock over the last 4 years. Sometimes the gate is up and locked. sometimes it is torn down. Then other times there is no lock? Cool little place though. I have enjoyed playing up there for many years now. It wasn't a rock climbing hangout until about 7 years ago. Now it is starting to get over run with them.

I can't believe all the extra roads there are, and we used to camp by those big rocks 20 years ago.
I couldn't believe that little meadow before you turn right someone drove thru it and tore it all up, someone has put up signs now but who could be so stupid to do something like that.
If we are talking the same it is called 216 and the road did go up the hill but it was a little more then what we wanted to do so we went back to the "Y" and kept on going on 216.

this is what trail damage says but i thought the gate at camp dick was closed till july 4th? isnt that the trailhead for middle st vrain?

Coming from the south, take Highway 72 to Peaceful Valley and follow signs to Camp Dick. The trailhead is on the right just past the winter gates, going uphill before you get to the camp itself

If you know how to get to St. Vrain trail head toward the second campground which is Camp Dick. The start for Bunce School Road starts between the two campgrounds. Once you past the first campground it's not very far and there will be a road to your right that will head back the way you were just coming and I do believe it's just after a set of gates. If you go to Camp Dick you missed the turn off. If you come in from the school side take highway 7 out of Lyons and you will see the turnoff for Peaceful Valley. Stay on highway 7 for another 200 or 300 yards and the trail in on the left side of the road and you will see this sign. I hope this helps

ive been to the gate at camp dick i thought that was middle st vrain??? ive never been past the gate either since its always been locked.

Jamie, You should be able to find it pretty easy. The basic road isn't much. There are a couple of side roads you can hit that have a little excitment to them. If you look around you might even find the old plane crash up there. I think if you do a search on this sight you can find the real directions. Pearson and Johnny parks are both open. They are a little longer trails and about the same on excitment. All three make a nice day ride until the Middle St. Vrain opens back up.

Eric, Pearson park is sort of a continuation of Johnny Park trail. If you follow the trails all the way through you will end up on the east fork fish creek road coming out sort of near Marys lake off the Peak to Peak HWY.

When you drive West from Big Elk Meadows and up the Johnny park trail you will see a sign that points you towards Pearson park heading North. You will pass through a couple of gates that ask you to please close them behind you. I'll look and see what the trail numbers are and post them tomorow. Until then you can see Pearson Park from this sight.
