Moab Trip Report * NO EJS content *

We left Loveland on Sun. morning April 2nd due to a delay caused by of bad food. I recommend avoiding Mickey D's in Loveland

We towed the Pinzgauer out to Moab. According to the GPS we averaged 60mph on the way out there, including stopping in Rifle for Gas and driving to I-25 in Loveland. Not bad. the 99CC f-350 PSD got ~11mpg on the way out there towing my 4500lb Pinzgauer on a 16' trailer. Not the best, but I was able to maintain 60 up both Vail and Eisenhower on the way there and back. Had I backed off the throttle I'm sure I could have saved a few gallons. It was my 1st real towing experience and I was pleasantly surprised with how well the truck towed.

On to the wheeling content: We ran Fins and Things, Hells Revenge (no pics) and Kane Creek Canyon.

Monday: Fins and Things was a great trail with nice weather, however I am still pulling seat cushion out of my ass from some of the descents.
Driving a cab-over vehicle down some of those obstacles really causes pucker factor. Alas the pics aren't the best because we had my 1 1/2 yr old son and my wife and were going solo. Kelsi often hopped out on the more hair raising descents, so often she was holding Noah while I did the obstacle. I watched some guys in an H3 do some of the steepest lines and was quite impressed for something that is typically only used as a grocery getter.

After Fins and things the Pinz began to act up. It was having a rough time idling and then died in the parking lot of Hell's revenge. I suspected an electrical issue, but after a short while it started back up...so this has led me to believe it's a flooding issue. Anyway....

    Tuesday: Kane Creek

Great trail that is so different from the typical Moab. Some of those off camber ledges were 'interesting' in a vehicle with scant articulation. But otherwise I ran the trail in 2wd. The last run out of the canyon was fun because the Pinz has no power steering and little articulation, leading to tires in the air quite often. It's kind of a 'point it straight up the obstacle' kind of thing. No flexing out, no turning, just point it and go. The weather this day was beautiful. We only ran into 2 other vehicles that day. The Pinz ran excellent...until the highway drive back to the motel where I wasn't able to keep it running at more than 55mph. It was missing a lot and seemed to lack full power.....

(Unbelievable, Noah was fast asleep up this last section)

    Wednesday: Hells' Revenge

woke up early to Work on Pinz. Spent 3hrs fiddling...test driving...fiddling...test driving to no avail. Got sick of that. We rented a Jeep and ran Hell's Revenge in the rain. The slick rock looks so cool in the rain. It turns from red to silver....We skipped the overlook and didn't do the hot-tubs or the escalator, but otherwise ran every obstacle. No pics because it was raining and I was focusing on keeping it between the lines. This trail is still the same as I remember it back in 1994 at age 18 in my Scout, only I now get pucker factor on the steep ascents and descents much more.

Thursday we went to Arches NP. It snowed, rained, had sunshine and the wind blew all in a period of 5 hrs. Taking my child to the sandy areas underneath some arches was the highlight of my trip. I was a kid all over again

Friday: returned to Loveland Same amount of time, same gas mileage...only a totally different feeling driving down the interstate.......

    Peace,
    Zach

I did Kane Creek in my parents 03 Rubicon and on a stock rubicon with only the 2" teraflex blocks, it needed some help, but made it up their with out a winch! The 2nd picture up is that spot by the waterfall right?

yes, as you come around that curve it gets more technical along the cliff edge. Very interesting when steering and articulation is limited. When did you go?

Very cool!!! Looks like you guys had a great time!! We are doing Arches tomorrow and then hitting the trails the rest of the weekend. Leave in about 4 hours. The jeep is loaded and packed down. Was there a lot of people down there yet?
