Thread: Minot, ND

    Minot, ND

What do you know about it? This is where our next duty station will be so I am looking for any and all intel! As much as I loathe the idea, it appears my wife's position will require us to live on base. But if that changes, we may be looking for houses to rent. This is only a 2yr assignment so buying really isn't in the cards.

What sort of outdoor activities are there? What should we not miss? Anything to look out for?

Thanks for any and all help.

Best of luck! As others have stated, expect flat landscapes and lots of wind and cold. Snow that shows up in September that doesn't melt till June. Harsh environment. But the people are good, hardworking, midwest folk.

Lots of daylight in the summer, probably accompanied by lots of mosquitoes...

On the up-side, if you are not into climbing stuff, there are not many climbing tasks required....

I got folks up there. They like it! They did say it was expensive to die in the winter time...
It was something about the cost of pile drivers...

I would hope that the oil boom is gone up there, my old man supplied a bunch of stuff for a few peaker power plants that were around, and Minot was the closest to all of them. He would tell stories about when it was dinner time in town, the lines for everything including McDonalds was 30-40 people long. The town just wasn't big enough to support that many people. Assuming it died down then it probably would just be flat and cold then lol.

I was up there for 3 days for work a few years ago. Seemed like an OK town. All the food I ate was great. There was a wing place that had all you could eat wings and all you could drink beer for $15 IIRC.
Have you ever seen a man eat so much fish?

    I am LOL! Funny stuff.

From what I have read, the oil boom is still on, but perhaps not going crazy.

Bugs - I am hoping they have to be much better than they are here.

I was wondering if you might be a pheasant hunter. There's a plus for ND if you are.
Why is it that common sense isn't so common anymore?

We know by now, a place is what you make it. I am excited for a change of pace. But it looks like wheeling opportunities are worse there than here. And if I am to store my bronco inside, it'll be 20 miles away in town.

Will be ordering engine heaters for the DD's here soon so I can install them.

Problem is distinguishing the mosquito's from the pheasants as they are the same size. I lived in grand forks for 10 years so just as bad as minot but with a bit more life. Been to minot a few times and it wasn't a bad place pre oil boom. The cold is no joke the coldest I saw was -46f with 25mph winds so windchill in the -80's. Not uncommon to have the high temp at night and the low during the day. You will find out that just breathing can hurt. Remote start is a good investment even with a block heater as when it's really cold it doesn't take long to have a ice cold motor. By the end of winter you're looking forward to summer but by the end of summer you're hoping the first freeze of the year comes soon to kill of the bugs.

How do prepare a mosquito? Wrap in bacon?

Great info, thanks! We will begin acquiring better winter clothing once we get up there.

Bacon helps with loads of alcohol to chase it down.

Good bug spray helps but they will find spots you cant spray ie eye balls. Eventually if you're lucky your body gets used being sucked dry and it's just annoying as hell and not to itchy. Until you reach that point it sucks to be you. The biting flies on the other hand.

Wow, I was really hoping to get away from so many biting bugs. They seem more attracted to me than most people. Golfing with 7 other guys and I am usually the only one with several bites after a round.
