Shows you what I know on the beef axles...

My full-spool has yet to fail me, but I really hate it on the street! I keep up because it's less moving parts to break and just not drive my EB on the street much.

The only reason why I am considering not going to a spool is I have cutting brakes. Even though I have yet to use them I'd like to keep the function just in case. I could go with an ARB, supposedly the strongest locker for a 14 bolt, but it's twice the price.
Have you ever seen a man eat so much fish?

  3. #43
Yeah, I see your point. Cutting brakes are a great feature. Are there any other selectable lockers for the 14b? I dislike the failure rate of the ARB (usually some seal or air line issue).

Locker has been installed in the carrier. I couldn't find any replacement shafts locally in the junkyards so I ordered some on eBay from UT, they arrived today. Should have it all back together this weekend.

Found that the hub on the side that broke was loose, both spindle nuts were actually cracked. I think since the hub was loose it was allowing the shaft to bend and eventually break.

Not yet. I had to order some tall jack stands to support the rear while I remove the axle housing, they should be here any day. Also found the outer bearing on the hub is cracked. Going to take the housing to Sessions Motorsports and figure out the best way to repair, either weld on a new spindle or get a new housing.

Got some jack stands tall enough to allow me to remove the rear axle.

You mind sharing where you got those jack stands? I could use a set just like that.

They are Sunex 1410, 10-Ton high height. I got them from Amazon but it looks like the price went way up. I paid $147, looks like Summit is the cheapest right now at $206.

Took the housing to Sessions Motorsports. After checking the housing to make sure it was straight and there were not any other issues we decided to cut the spindle off and weld a new one on. The other option would have been to move all my parts to another housing. The housing and spindle are at the machinist now so they can be machined for a perfect fit then it will be welded. Housing might be ready to put back together by the weekend.

Well it's all back together. The caliper bracket was not located correctly so the shop needs to fix that. I didn't have any extra parts left over and it runs down the street fine though.

Cut the old one off, machined the inside of the axle tube to true it, machined the new spindle to match the axle tube, inserted the spindle to the proper length.

Since the axle tube was machined true and the spindle was then machined for a tight fit an alignment bar was not needed.

Depending on how bent it is, he could probably fix it. He does have an alignment bar.

Caliper bracket is now fixed. Just a few minor things to do and it will be back to 100%.
