    Minot, ND

What do you know about it? This is where our next duty station will be so I am looking for any and all intel! As much as I loathe the idea, it appears my wife's position will require us to live on base. But if that changes, we may be looking for houses to rent. This is only a 2yr assignment so buying really isn't in the cards.

What sort of outdoor activities are there? What should we not miss? Anything to look out for?

Thanks for any and all help.

Best of luck! As others have stated, expect flat landscapes and lots of wind and cold. Snow that shows up in September that doesn't melt till June. Harsh environment. But the people are good, hardworking, midwest folk.

Lots of daylight in the summer, probably accompanied by lots of mosquitoes...

On the up-side, if you are not into climbing stuff, there are not many climbing tasks required....

I got folks up there. They like it! They did say it was expensive to die in the winter time...
It was something about the cost of pile drivers...

I would hope that the oil boom is gone up there, my old man supplied a bunch of stuff for a few peaker power plants that were around, and Minot was the closest to all of them. He would tell stories about when it was dinner time in town, the lines for everything including McDonalds was 30-40 people long. The town just wasn't big enough to support that many people. Assuming it died down then it probably would just be flat and cold then lol.

I was up there for 3 days for work a few years ago. Seemed like an OK town. All the food I ate was great. There was a wing place that had all you could eat wings and all you could drink beer for $15 IIRC.
Have you ever seen a man eat so much fish?

    I am LOL! Funny stuff.

From what I have read, the oil boom is still on, but perhaps not going crazy.

Bugs - I am hoping they have to be much better than they are here.

I was wondering if you might be a pheasant hunter. There's a plus for ND if you are.
Why is it that common sense isn't so common anymore?
