I guess Mom has got herself a dose of the covids but she is fine. I figure that the sooner everybody tries out some covids, the better off we will be what with building up some immunity. I dont believe its gonna go away so we might as well embrace it.

I’m happy to absorb all 52 degrees today, and then 60 of them tomorrow
I guess I need to rejet this carb, eh?
Calibration was done at sea level, and I’m in Denver..

Wandering in the wilderness.
I got a few more things to fix up before we drive.. probably needs plugs. As she sits I can’t even get her to idle long enough to get up to operating temp. And I don’t want to try driving her till I know she’ll at least run well enough to get me back home.
‘86 F-250 with 460 big block. Just put a new Holley 770cfm Street avenger carb on her. (I returned the edelbrock when fedex was super delayed getting me the parts needed).
I’m at 7k feet elevation.
She fires quick and easy, but she won’t idle well at all. She idles super low, 4-500rpm. She’ll idle for a few minutes then finally die.
If I try to give any gas she stumbles and dies.
If I’m really careful I can get her to rev up a bit (2000-2500rpm), and then she sounds like she’s running great…
But then she’ll stumble and die again.
I’m guessing the jets are way too big for my elevation.. but I also think the timing is way off.
I haven’t had a chance to check timing yet.
Plugs were really wet (but also thick soot like there was dirt in the cylinder). Just put new plugs in ran it for a few minutes, but ran out of time to pull them and check for fouling.
Thoughts?
What is the reason for the carb swap to begin with? Was it running like it is now? I just ask because i dont want you to waste time chasing problems trying to tune this carb if the engine has other problems that are making it run poorly.
Having said that, timing is the very first thing you should verify because if you change timing later, you will have to go back and readjust the air/fuel mixture.
After the timing is set correctly, set the float levels in both bowls. Most people adjust the floats to where the gas is right at the bottom of the check plug holes but i would set them lower, like where you have to rock the truck side to side pretty good to get the gas to slosh out.
Next, set the idle which you will have to play with some as you adust the air/fuel mixture screws. Its best to use a vacuum gauge to set the air/fuel needles but i almost always just did it by sound. You basically back one of them out till its not changing the idle any more, (idle sbould innitially increase when you back the screw out) then slowly strart turning it back in till it just starts to decrease idle rpm. Go back and forth from side to side till both are right there where if you start to turn them in that it immediately slows idle rpm.
That is about all you can do till you start playing with jets but hooefully by this time, it will be running at least good enough to do a good plug check. When doing a plug check, you want the engine good and hot and you really want it to be running at a decent load for a little bit. Try not to idle it much between then and pulling the plugs. You will of course need to readjust the air/fuel screws after each jet change as well.
Good luck.

It was running great, the carb seals failed and she was pouring gas from the accelerator pump and float bowls.
Decided to buy a bigger performance carb instead of just rebuilding OEM.
Will check timing asap tomorrow - this is likely the issue (I remember someone ****ing around with timing a few years ago when I was using it as a plow at 10k ft).
Will do all the things you listed, in that order.
Thanks man!
I tentatively sold a motorcycle today with possible delivery tomorrow. I might buy a bike tomorrow or Tuesday, so the inventory number does not get any better.
Ha! I just saw that the kabois lost. This will not please a couple people at work but it does please me.
Haha. I will have to use that one after i innocently ask Robert how the game went.
