Kinda freaked me out too when I saw my first one. Didn't like that shat one bit but damn that thing was one hell of a lesson in compounding. So much so I made my own aromatization spreadsheet to play any "what if" scenarios as I wanted. I never found one online that was as flexible as I wanted and I'm sure Jake would know how to make his own if he ever got interested.

The major motivator I found in it was the impact of extra principle payments anytime even if not consistent monthly. When I saw how much it saved over the life of the loan it was easy to understand it was no different than if I had made that much more (interest savings but don't forget to multiply that by your Fed&State tax rate!) per year in income. "A penny saved is a penny earned" is a quote based in reality.

It also becomes an eye opening awareness to the damage debt, in general, does to one's financial well being. All those little loans/debts add up. We found we became very allergic to debt in all it's forms. I got the impression none of that is lost on Jake

Credit scores are kind of dumb. I pay my CC off every month but apparently my balance was hurting my score so the home lender had me pay it down but not off. Bumped my credit score 40 points in a few days and dripped my rate quite a bit.

The way they work is kinda stupid. I have heard several different stories on how to build the best credit and one thing that is in almost all of them is that you dont pay off the credit card every month but who knows. It seems like advise on that is like many other things and there are as many answers as there are people to tell them.

The only thing i know for sure is you will never get great credit without owing several people money which seems backwards.

(home loans aside...) and quite often the only way to get a loan is to absolutely prove you don't need the money...

Yeah, we got the opposite advice. Pay 'em all off, and make sure they're long term accounts. Gave us a score that makes finance people drool.
