The daughter got one of these from her grandfather for her 17th Birthday along with a couple of lenses and a case, I was floored.
I have no experience with DSLR's but had some very nice Canon SLR's (for the time) when I was younger.
So the question is are there any gotya's that can be avoided with this model or DSLR's in general.
If you are not appalled with the actions of the current Administration you’re not paying attention.
Does she have any SLR experience at all (or any photography experience)?

But if she is looking for basic quality picture taking help, I'd start with:
Understanding Exposure and Learning to See Creatively. These links go to Amazon, but a lot of libraries have them on the shelves too. I have found them to be worth owning.
She is going to want software too, in order to get the most out of her pics. Lightroom is an ideal start, and you should be able to download a 30 day trial from Adobe (if I remember correctly).

Yes, she is actually pretty good when she wants to be and has taken some outstanding B&W shots with one of my old 35 mm SLR's.
She has taken the schools photo class offerings and took second place in a district wide contest at her school with one of her pictures.
ETA: I was looking more for weak points, etc on the camera to warn her about.
The books may still help, but she probably has most of the knowledge she needs then, apart from any editing she might want to do on the computer. The one thing that has tripped just about all of us up is not remembering to zero out the camera after shooting in any of the manual modes.

Again, showing my ignorance with true digital photography, how does Lightroom compare to Photoshop or Gimp? She seems to be a whiz with Gimp.
I don't mind getting her more software if there is a true advantage to it.
Lightroom is similar to a gallery type of program, where you can easily see all of your photos in one place. Purely my opinion, but it is meant as much to help manage the assets as it is to edit them. Sure helps me a ton.
Ok, that helps. It looks like I can get her the education version of Lightroom for $99 or Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended for $299.
Would the Photoshop CS4 Extended version be a drastic improvement over Gimp? Or would Lightroom and Gimp be more realistic given her level of expertise. I also have a older version of Photoshop Standard 7.0 we no longer have a use for here at work I could snag for her.

A lot of people who use GIMP are quite happy with it. I don't think she would need Photoshop just yet. In fact, a lot of photographers who used to use Photoshop now do 99% of that stuff in Lightroom.
