the donations have droped to almost nothing. big thanks to those that are helping with this!! in the case that is working thru the courts now i understand that bosloughs first motion did not work but that they did push the court date. so boslough gets some more time. i am still looking for any old pictures of the road. any users of the road in the 50's on to the present. please write letters to the forrest service and to the boulder county lawyers and comisioners plus the sheriff. keep this in front of them.

I'm pretty much ashamed with what's happening. I'm almost to the point of being embarassed to be associated with a group of people who so few carry the weight of so many. What if next time I'm out on the trail I ask to see your blue ribbon coalition card, local 4x4 organization card or your tread lightly card before I begin to help you. I'll quiz you about how you've helped any cause to justify you being out among the ones who have. And if you forgot to donate this year I'd just keep going. Why? Because you don't deserve to be on the trails if you do nothing to keep them open. This is a fine example. Someone's working to keep trails open and all he's asking for is 5 bucks from everyone on this board. He's lucky to get 1% of this board to help him. That's tragic. Keep up the fight VB and if things don't change, I'll kick that extra fifty bucks I was going to give as a bonus to a great number of donations your way.

i kinda like yer thinkin here.ive not thought of that before. you know that colorado has an ohv sticker program too. that mony does go to good projects. i think we should all put our member statis in orgs out there where folks can see them. i have found that folks always find the mony for things that are important to them. this might not be that important to some.
true to form however boslough is side steping. rather than get in front of a judge his lawyer is doing anything he can to keep from standing before one. the court date has been pushed back.
i am sad to say that one of the men that inspired me to be involved in this has passed away. glenn tallman was quite a guy and lived 94 years. i have to wonder if boslough is going to try to push this till the other gentleman passes as well.they sure dont have any proof that the road is private. but they also know of the apathy in the rec user groups

VB-let me know if there's anything I can do to help you. If you need me to, I can try to and do some research to track down some photographs of the road and also any other information I come across. Just let me know and fill me in on any details that you need.
J5 - I'd hate to say it, but not all of us are in a position to donate money at this time, even if it is only $5/month. I've been in and out of work for the past couple of months so the money that I DO get goes to my Jeep payment and insurance and rent, and student loans starting in the next couple of months. I do what I can to donate my time by participating in trail builds, clean up runs and things like that. AND, offering to do research smile.gif VB - I am sorry that I am not able to donate any money at this time as I am sure that it will help you out a great deal. Maybe once I'm in a position where I'm recieving a paycheck on a regular basis, I will be able to help.

Nicely put spacely, I'm in a similar situation but unemployed nearly 11 months now. It's too much of a struggle just to get enough money together to pay the bills, and over the last few months I haven't even been able to do that.
Times are tough for a lot of people. Others already donate what they can to their own causes. I hate to say it, but this issue just isn't very high on a lot of our lists.

Exactly, the unemployment level of the group on this board is pretty high. I had high plans of sending Vernon and good chunk of change, but when I unexpectedly loss my job...all funds had to go to keeping the family under a roof.
I am unemployed, my husband was laid of in January...so times are tough and tight. Like many others I am doing my damndest to keep the bills paid and food on the table.
I can also volunteer my time and effort to any research you need done Vernon, I am less than a mile from a library and have the time to do whatever work you need done.
It is not that this is not an important issue, but if it comes down to buying a few extra cans of formula for my baby...that has to come first.

this issue has some movement right now but in many areas too soon to speek them out in public but national attention is growing and there are folks in pretty high places that are expressing an interest. to what extent we dont know yet . but?
and of course i will be up there soon enough removeing the obstructions, so stay tuned. we should drw a name in the next couple of weekends though. for the latest prize!!!!

Vernon, it was good talking to you yesterday and I hope that I'll be able to help in some way through my contacts. I talked to Al here and he said that since it's a legal battle now, that in his opinion the best course of action would be to contact the CoA4WD Clubs and the national A4WD Clubs organization and get legal help from those powers, both political and financial. I think everyone that could potentially help would like to have a brief summary of what the issue is, where the road is located, where the issue is legally at present, and what course of action you're pursuing. It's very unfortunate that the majority landowner is turning on you personally now with litigation, so I really believe that you need the help of the state and national organizations behind you legally and financially even more than what a few 4x4 enthusiasts can do to help. I know you have a personal lawyer, but I'm trying to get the name and contact info of the state and national association lawyers for you. Be sure to stop in and say Hi the next time you're down close to the shop. Thanks, Aaron

I understand when people are in financial crisis. I don't however understand why with over a thousand members on this board, this post has generated interest from so few. Not keeping up with this board lately, I'm guessing there are still a lot of people posting about where to find parts, what things they're adding to their rigs, etc. etc. It's frustrating to see that some people can't put their money where there mouth is.

I too feel the response has been disappointing. In an effort to further support VB's efforts, here's an offer which may help those who wish to contribute but are short on funds. As has been mentioned repeatedly even just $1 goes a long way in a community this large, however I can appreciate the feeling of insignificance one might experience in mailing $1.
So here's the deal... purchase any CO4x4 sticker(s), mention the Barking Dog issue, and the proceeds from your sticker purchase will be forwarded to the Barking Dog Fund on your behalf.
Proceeds from sticker sales typically support the existance of CO4x4, however I am always willing to divert the funds (partial or full) to other 4x4-related issues/organizations if so requested. So, if you'd like to help VB in his fight to save the Barking Dog Trail but are short on cash, here's a way for you to contribute and receive a cool sticker at the same time graemlins/thumbsup.gif Again, simply purchase a CO4x4 sticker and be sure to indicate that you'd like the sticker proceeds to be donated to the Barking Dog fund. You're free to divert 100% of the proceeds, split it between BDF and CO4x4, etc. etc. Let me know if you have any questions.
Along these same lines, VB perhaps your own sticker or t-shirt sales / fund raiser might help? A "Public Access for Public Lands" theme perhaps? Again it's a way for those short on cash to contribute and come away with a little something to show for it too. Just a thought smile.gif

its odd. i have been in contact with some heavy hitters in congress recently as well as a well know access org. that is concidering helping. the state association is aparently willing to further help the folks from the big thompson 4x club are going to donate some of their proceeds from the weekends car show etc etc...... things are pickin up and yup if ech of the thousand plus folks on this board sent a buck each month we could get this thing settled.
thanks all. and remember that at this point we just dont have too far to go before we can draw a name for the raffle winner

the road has been blocked illegaly by a land owner up there and the county will not step in and tell him to stop obstructing the road. i have hired a lawyer to help to find a way to compell the county or the obstructing guy to get the stuff cleaned up. if you have used the road in the past i would love to here from you

I'd like to know the current legal status on this as well. One of the arguments for closure that I've heard very little about has to do with Boulder County's views on allowing roads that cross streambeds, and are actually IN the streambed for much of the way. If you walk up the Barking Dog trail right now (as I did yesterday), you will see that the "trail" is indeed a seasonal stream. I think the environmental problems with running vehicles up this streambed outweigh the whole pissing contest that's going on over historical use.
And what about the fact that Boulder County has closed the road from the other end (at Calwood, above Jamestown)? Why would they even consider allowing access to the same area from the north?
It seems to me that there are PLENTY of legal, undisputed roads to drive jeeps and ATVs on around here. Why are these guys so determined to drive this rather short trail that doesn't connect to anything else?

i havent stoped by that site in a long time. richard mccloud the site owner is obviously slanted and there isnt much on the bd issue other then my post that come anywhere near the truth and there sure are alot of anon folks that have something to say. that whole thing over there just gets me boiling since folks can post and say anything there or anywhere and its up to others to disprove pure crap.
mark boslough and his lawyer and his family all know very well that the road is a public road. in fact his lawyer has never ever been able to show one piece of evidence that the road is not public.
they spew their lies and avoid standing in front of a judge. they use their money and bully 80 year old men that also own property up there.
this is not over by along shot. i care not what they say on the d e site

graemlins/old_glory.gif graemlins/beer.gif Yo, VBster, sent the money tonight via PayPal. Sent $10 for each tire on my quad, including the spare, for $50.00. Wish I could send more, maybe next month.
like I told you in my e-mail, me and my buddies used this road quite a bit just outta high school. I'll have to figure out when that was.
What i can't figure out is that the tree huggers don't think that this is a road. It's on maps, and who the hell (and why) did they build an expensive bridge over St. Vrain creek to access it. Another thing, it sure makes a good hiking trail/biking trail when people like us keep the road in use with a vehicle now and then.
I'll try to figure out exactly when it was that we were using this road and I'll let you know, but we used to go up there and to Caribou every weekend in the early 80's.
Keep up the battle, it seems every where you go any more the tree heads are getting more and more areas shut down, not because it's bad, but the counties and the state don't want to waste the $$ fighting these people who don't have a life but they do have $$ from trusts or lawsuits agaist people who can't fight back..
Come on everyone, first its Barking Dog, whats next? Moab?
Later........... graemlins/flipoff.gif

Hey. What a potty mouth that Lounge Lizard is. I'm the buddy that use to 4wheel Barking Dog with him 20 some years ago and I'm also tired of people trying to close public roads for their own gain. Keep up the fight. Later graemlins/bounce4.gif

I recently purchased a brand new National Geographic Trails Illustrated topo map #100, Boulder Golden and notice it shows a road coming off of Highway 7 about 2/3rds of the way to 72 from Lyons. It goes up Long Gulch in the vicinity of Balarat (site), has a few spurs off of it here and there and connects to 87/87J on Balarat Hill. Does this sound like Barking Dog or is there another road in that area? Trails Illustrated is usually very careful about what they show on their maps.

If it goes by Balarat, I'm sure it's the "Ol-Dog" trail. My Nat'l Geographic by Topo shows it too... graemlins/beer.gif

I was talking to my brother who is very involed in trail issues through the Larimer County Horsemens Association. He mentioned that there was a somewhat similar case near Estes Park several years ago. Private ranch had an access trail across it to reach NF. Public was allowed to use trail for many years. Honda Corporation (he thinks) bought the ranch and tried to close access. Legal action ensued. Court found that since the public had openly used the trail for "x" number of years it had become public right of way. He could not remember details of what property or what year(s) this took place. You are probably way ahead of me on this one, too but thought I would bring it up just in case. I know a precident is a very halpful thing in a legal argument.
