White River National Forest wilderness proposals
February 4, 2003

UDALL PROPOSAL

• 82,000 acres of new wilderness.

• 558,000 roadless acres would be off-limits to motorized vehicles.

• 15 miles of Deep Creek would get Wild and Scenic River designation.

MCINNIS 2002 BILL

• 58,000 acres of wilderness.

• 14 roads in Red Table Mountain wilderness would be left open to off-road vehicles.

• No Wild and Scenic River designation.

Both proposals would continue to allow National Guard training over wilderness areas and protect the town of Gypsum's water rights.

This is all the info I could find besides what I read in the physical paper. If you know more plese post it. I'd like a link to give input to Udall about his "ideas"

I've been reading about Udall's proposal in the papers for the past couple days and I'd like to tell someone what I think of it.

However, I've never contacted a state representative before. Is it appropriate to contact Udall's office if he's not my rep. (my rep. is Tancredo)? The House website (http://www.house.gov/Welcome.html) directs you to your local representative. I just want to tell someone how I feel and not bark up the wrong tree! Can someone less naive than me detail the most effective way to communicate with state reps. and other gov't. figures?

There has to be more of you out there like me that have opinions about matters such as this Udall proposal but just aren't sure how to make yourselves heard.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,
it is entirely appropriate to contact your representative, even if it is not Udall. It lets him know the feelings of the public he is representing, and can be a gauge if this messure comes to a full vote. A good site for contact information along with recreation issues is http://responsiblerecreation.org . As a Poli Sci major I was taught that voting is just half the process, keeping up with the issues and in contact with ellected officials is the other half. Plus any communication with your repreentative lets him know how you feel on hot issues affecting your region.

Give Scott McInnis's office a call and tell them that you support his proposal. I called them yesterday. The # is 202 225-4761.
