View Full Version : What's the Official Hackett DeaL?

I've heard Hackett (and I'm guessing Longwater) is closed. I'm assuming it's because of the fire.
Can anyone tell me what the official word is on the closure? How long, etc.
Thanks,
Sonny

Contact the Forest Service, Pike National Forest, for official word. Based on my knowledge of what will need to be done in the burn area I assume it will be closed for a minimum of 3-5 years.

Things may have changed but I was told that it should be open in February. I can only hope.

I just got a call from the forest service. They stated that parts of the Hayman Fire area will be re-openned in March to motor vehicles. However, they are limiting access and changing some rules. If the new rules are followed and the people don't tear up what they are opening ~ they will open more, and more, and more until the entire area is totally open.
The only rule change they gave me was that you cannot leave the roads. Before, you can leave the roads up to 300 ft ~ but now, if you want to park/leave your vehicle, you have to stay on the road to do it (I amagine getting out of the 'lanes of traffic' is ok).
She didn't give any dates. But I'll be checking back with them later. The overall theme was if the people are being good to the area, they'll open more up. If not, we will loose what they open.

Guess we're screwed then.
I live a few miles from Hackett and used to run it all the time and there always seems to be a bad apple or two out there. The bikes really love to run off the trail too, but they don't tend to be out there in as heavy of numbers. The trafic probably won't pick up until they open the Longwater/Hacket trails. The other trails (like Mettberry) just aren't as popular. I sure hope people behave themselves. I know that if I'm out there and see people acting up I'm going to jump on them. At least Predator put up many permenant barriers on the areas that saw the greatest amount of tresspassing.
I hope I'm wrong and people behave themselves as we are granted a return to one of my favorite areas.

Let's do what we can to keep this area open and for outsiders to look favorably on us. Makes sure if anyone is off the roads we inform them of the rules and let them know the ramifications of their actions.
Does the forest service need people to help with clean up or erosion control? We should all do what we can in the area.

I was up in the burn area last Sunday. FS 360 (Cedar Mtn. Road) is still closed, thus no access yet to Hackett and of course Longwater. Some of the roads in the area are open, and erosion control seems to be working well. Spring rains will tell. I Went down FR 3 towards Trail Creek Campground, and the road is washed out (but passable) at the bottom.
Sure would like to hear if there are plans to open up the Hackett area this summer.

They may want to keep these trails closed long enough to be over grown. they may want to close them forever.

It will take pressure from your group in the next 2 years to reopen those trails.

NEW CLOSURE STATUS
As of 10:00 am, MDT on April 28, 2003, the closure order for the Hayman Fire burn area will be lifted. Motorized travel will be allowed on county and forest system roads, but not off the roads. Parking will be allowed only in designated parking areas and sites.
These restrictions are being implemented to protect fire rehabilitation efforts and provide for visitor health and safety.

Number for Hackett(FR613) and Longwater(FR626)???????
Access Information to the
Hayman Fire Area
Due to the highly erosive soils and the threat of flooding and mudslides, the presence of recovery work including aerial operations, and the huge number of weakened trees subject to windfall, the area around the Hayman Fire has been closed. Please refer to the Closure Order signed July 19, 2002.
This information covers the Hayman Burn and its surrounding area (generally NW of Woodland Park, west of Hwy 67 to Deckers, from Deckers west of Hwy 126 north 6 miles toward Buffalo Creek, south of Wellington Lake, east of the Lost Creek Wilderness, north of Hwy 24 to Wilkerson Pass, SE of Tarryall Reservoir). Refer to the official map that is part of the Closure Order. Any questions should be directed to the Forest Service at (719) 553-1400.
The area covers portions of State Game Management Units 51, 501 and 511.

I called the 800 number on the website and talked to a lady who didn't instill me with confidence that she really knew what was going on ( a lot of CYA talk).
The jist of what she said was the info posted by Upnover is the old status. More roads were supposed to be opened today but the FS is running behind schedule getting trees downed and signs up. Things should be more clear by Friday or Saturday.
ROADS THAT ARE OPEN WILL BE MARKED WITH A WHITE ARROW. EVERYTHING ELSE IS CLOSED.
Contact the Platte RD of Pike NF for info on specific roads and trails.

Well FS 360 is Cedar Mountain Road (the road you drive in to get to Hackett and Longwater) and it says it's closed. I can't remember the numbers for Hackett and Longwater off the top of my head. I will find out though.
