The Western U.S. Nationals are coming to a close with the season finale' coming to the famed Donner Ski Ranch outside of Truckee, CA. The event will carry two entities of epic proportions, the series battle (which is as close as they get), and the After Rock Party at the Donner Ranch Lodge. The season points race in the Unlimited class is crazy close with only 3 points seperating the top five teams. Can Jason Paule win back the title from Shannon Campbell? Or will Cody waggoner win two in a row (won 2006 Donner as well) and steal the championship from the determined Rock Runner Racer. In the Pro Modfified it looks as though the Lovell Brothers may take the title (currently a 4 point lead), but the battle for second between Brian Errea and Rookie Tim Florian might absorb the the championship title as well. Check out all the craziness on June 30th-July 1st.

Jason Berger pulling a wheelie during the W.E.ROCK Halftime Show Last year Donner has carried a ton of memories for rock crawling including Tracy Jordan's first win in the regional series back in two-thousand one and Jason Scherer's battle with Mark Berger only two years later. This time around was a ton different in that teams would ride into this event with only one thing on their mind, the series championship. Here Shannon Campbell was the man to beat in the Unlimited Class with Jeff Mello leading the Pro Modified Class and Dan Patterson leading the Stock Class.

Tech and Registration offered a little insight as to how the event was going to carry out. W.E.ROCK took over the ski lodge and held the most outrageous "After Rock Party" of the year. While teams would park their vehicles and head to the party W.E.ROCK Staff would tech rigs in and send them on their way. Little did teams realize that there would be over twenty-six lead changes throughout the event.

Day one started out as a calm peaceful competition as teams would play the safe game until mistakes rode over. Once teams started racking up DNF's, the bonus game was on, throwing a great show at the spectators. At the top of day one was Cody and Jim Waggoner with only negative twelve points, Shannon Campbell and Mike Deau with negative eleven points, Tracy Jordan with negative ten points, and Jason Scherer until a roll-over slammed him down to tenth place.

In the Pro Modified class, Dean Bulloch and Karl Mumford along with Bob Standage and Tom Ahern were leading the event with lead changes running back and forth between the two and the brothers Brad and Roger Lovell and the wife/husband team of Becca and Dustin Webster sitting patiently in third and forth waiting for the mistakes to start happening.

While the commotion was greatly building in the upper two classes, the Modified stock had some of their own with Troy Bailey leading after day, Dan Patterson in second place nipping on thee heals, and Buzzy Bronsema close behind in third place.

Day two found bonus lines taking over as teams had to fight for the win while struggling from the day before. After the first course, Shannon Campbell and Mike Deau would swipe the lead from the Waggoners, but the second course found Campbell and Deau with thee opportunity to extend their lead to over twenty points by taking a bonus line that Waggoner opted to miss. Campbell and Deau lined up and hit it sending them backwards and down the hill and throwing Bruce Zeller into the lead. From there, Zeller and his spotter George Poston would battle the Waggoners back and forth creating over lead changes between the two of them.

The Pro Modified ran very similar as the lead changes were being made between Standage and Bulloch all day until course A2 where Standage flipped over backwards and was unable to upright the vehicle in regulated time. While the Lovell's moved up, it was rookie Nate Olyer and his spotter baggy pants who moved up from the back of the all the way to third place, bumping the RedBull team of Becca and Dustin Webster down to fourth.

The Stock class finished down the list with Buzzy Bronsema and Sean Wilson taking first and National Champions Dan Patterson and Bob Roggy taking second. Troy Bailey sat in a distant third.

Coming down to "The Shootout" was something magical as we saw the big dogs get defeated and the rookies throw in some low scores. First up in sixth place was Ashleigh who was one of three teams to complete the course with Dean Bulloch and rookie Nate Olyer. Crowd favorites Becca and Dustin Webster timed out only ten feet from the finish, Brad and Roger Lovell rolled while driving through the first set of gates, and Bob Standage didn't even show up at all.

In the Unlimited class, it was all about speed. What the Pro Modified's tried to crawl through, the Unlimited class literally jumped through. Jason Paule and Travis Wadeson was first but did not make a big enough move in the course to move up while Shannon Campbell and Mike Deau was second up and fifth overall, they didn't move up in the ranks though their run was quite exciting. Both teams of Tracy and Jason Jordan, and Jason Scherer and Lance Clifford kept their rivalry strong going into the final with a tie for third, Scherer and Clifford won that battle by one point. But it was Cody and Jim Waggoner who made the biggest move of all, even with nearly choosing the wrong cones to navigate through, the win was solidified until first place Bruce Zeller and George Poston hit a start gate bumping them into third and moving Scherer and Clifford into 2nd and the Waggoner duo into first.

By many, this was labeled as the best W.E.ROCK event of all time, but going into the Grand Nationals is another story. It is anyone's chance to win the national championship, all the top teams will be there, will you?

We are going to miss this one, and unfortunately the nationals as well. We ran into some trailer issues after we got back from Goldendale and were left with the choice of fixing the trailer, or competing (which requires the trailer), so we are taking the rest of the season off to trail wheel and maybe even get my buggy done.

Good luck to all the teams heading that way.

Ryan.
