Here is another group that I happend to stumble across while surfing the net. I don't like the idea of closing public areas to motorizeed vehicles, but I can definately understand the complaint.

I'm not only a wheeler. I enjoy backpacking and mountain biking as well. I have been to plenty of places where there is no motorized vehicles allowed. Hell, I've been to places where you would never be able drive into, even if you wanted to. I guess no one will ever be satisfied, on either side of the coin.

Hmm... what they're doing, sounds exactly like why we have areas designated as wilderness areas...

IMHO.... I think that is a horrible idea. I have been many places where vehicles are not allowed. There are plenty of them. What we need is more places that vehicles can go.

I looked at the site and the proposed area. My god, will these people not stop until they have it all? I think that there should be a fair split and for the most part there is. But that's not good enough for these people.

I backpack alot. And there are plenty of places to go where no vehicles can. I think it is crazy to make more space for just walking in. I have no idea why people would want to close roads to vehicular traffic. I hate backpacking on a road. If I can drive up it why walk. But on the other hand the places I backpack you could not even get a dirt bike in. There is plenty of land for all of us. But the tree huggers are just to lazy/stupid to find it. There are already alot of wilderness areas out there and NONE of those who try to close more land have even seen all the currently closed land.
Why can't every one who enjoys the environment co-exist.
And how in the hell are they going to get a quiet wilderness? I have been backpacking in the middle of Utah, 30 miles into the trail and you still see/hear airplanes and jets going over head.
There is plenty of land out there for what they want. Yet our trails are getting fewer. This causes more congestion on the established trails. I say more 4x4 trails and leave the wilderness area how they are. Theres plenty!

The week after Labor day I went up to Taylor lake, on Taylor pass near Aspen. Even though it is a popular 4WD trail, I sat by the lake for a couple of hours and never heard a sound.

It was weird, I thought I was deaf, but really cool. Can't wait to go back.

Also how long do hikers hear "our" noise? A few minutes as we drive by. What's the big deal? There are plenty of other "quiet" places.

I wrote this group a tactful letter and told them that most of us wheelers share the land with the hikers and the bikers and even stop to have friendly conversations with them. I pointed out that no one owns the land, even landowners are only "leasing" it during their lifetime. I expressed that I hoped that responsible "wheelers" never become polarized to the point where we try to push others off the land that God has provided for all of us to enjoy, but that if we do it will be because of groups like them.
I was reading your post, wbroniko, and I have often marveled at the quietness on the trails like Black Bear, Imogene, Schofield, Ophir etc. It makes you feel small and appreciate the mountains even more. How quiet is quiet enough? I'm just thinking about a deaf friend of mine and how much he would enjoy getting in the Jeep and hearing the quiet sounds of Bridal Veil falls.

I agree with Yeeper.I 4-wheel my jeep and also use it to get me to the end of the road and hike, hunt and fish from there. There are many places they can go, I think this is just a cover for a different agenda.
