So they want to make a helmet law next year, so everone has to wear a helmet, and Denver wants to give tickets to bikers with loud pipes like mine:D

I trust my loud pipes to save my life in traffic, than I do a Helmet.

Helmets save your head, what about the rest of your body?

Surprised to see this thread today. Just this weekend while working on my bike my friend and I had this same discussion. He was involved in an accident last summer, a lady pulled out in front of him on Federal Blvd. He laid the bike down and bounced his head pretty good on the pavement. He was wearing a helmet and swears that the damn thing almost killed him. He has one of those small, just covers his skull helmets, and when he hit the pavement it shifted on his head and the strap amost choked him to death. If he had lost conciousness he would be dead, NOT from the impact but from his helmet. Just my .02.

i hate those half-helmets. hate them. i always rode with a full helmet, period.

not to rag on your friend, but those half-helmets are just for looks. i mean, really... you have a solid edge that goes around your head that can catch on the road if you come off your bike, yes, choking you or doing other damage.

that being said, while i don't personally care for super-loud pipes, i don't oppose them either. i guess i'm indifferent, but as a former rider, i didn't count on my exhaust to help me. my dad taught me to ride and he always preached paying attention and riding defensively to save my own life. i didn't sit in blind spots. i passed semis as quickly as i could to stay out ahead of them. i tried to ride in groups. i donno... i just don't fully buy the loud pipes save lives thing...

Exhaust should be within regulation regardless of the vehicle. I certainly couldn't run open pipes on my 5.7 suburban and motorcylces shouldn't be allowed to do it either. They should all fall within the limits of the law regarding decibles. Don't ride in blind spots and people won't try to turn into you. Motorcycle riding is inherently dangerous and if you want my opinion you're asking for it not wearing a helmet. Living near (4 blocks) from a biker bar drives home to me the fact that the noise law should be enforced. It's the few a-holes who ruin it for the majority (just like jeeping) but frankly I'm tired of the noise.

I`m a great rider (ex dirtbike rider), The main problem is people in cars are to lazy to turn there head when they change lanes, and yes my pipes have saved me from getting hit. When I`m coming up to someone on the highway to pass them, they just look in there mirror to change lanes, and not look over there shoulder, they start to come over in my lane, I`ve pulled in the clutch, and hit the throttle, and then they look over.

Going down streets, I hardly ever ride in the right lane. people are to lazy to stop at stop signs when they are coming off of side streets.
And if they don`t see me, they can hear me coming with the way my pipes are made, they kinda point up.

Helmets help, but I know of 3 people that has died in the last 2 years from chest injurys, and 1 from his jugular vein getting cut. No helmet would of helped them.
It should be a choice.

Some people are rude with there loud pipes, I`m not, only when I need to be.

Then you should be mad at the rude people who are ruining it for the rest of us. Don't blame the legislators of Denver, all they are doing is responding to the people who pay their salaries, the voters.

Unfortunately, the motorcycle world is filled with selfish idiots who think they have a license to be obnoxious to the general public. Whether it's the Harley idiots with their straight pipes or the sportbike riding "stunnas" pulling wheelies down the road, it makes all of us riders look like jerks, and we all pay the price.

As for helmet laws, I wear a full-face helmet 100% of the time, but I oppose helmet laws. Like you say, it should be a choice.

Or, as I like to say "an empty barn doesn't need a roof anyway." ;)

So if he wasn't wearing a helmet...................?

If he wasn't wearing a helmet I would have lost a close friend. As it was, I almost lost one anyway. My post was not to pick sides on the helmet issue, that is a choice best left to the rider, I just thought it was strange to see a post on here about a topic that I had discussed over the weekend.

Good one, on that last line:D LOL!
If I go down on the highway, I don`t think I would like to live through it, or at least get knocked out, and wake up in the hospital.
You are right, some Harley riders get there bikes and are rude, and like to hit all of the biker bars, I`ve only been in 3 biker bars all the years I`ve been riding. I have a bike to ride, and not down to the local bar, and to the next bar, and to the next bar, my bike gets alot of miles on it.
Its so funny to see guys at my work buy there first Harley. They start to grow there goatee, and get a dewrag, talk about going to Sturgis, and what are the best bikers bars.:lmao:

Don't forget the black leather vest with the 5 mandatory patches:

1. Loud pipes save lives
2. Helmet laws suck
3. Try Burning This One, Asshole!
4. Jane Fonda, American Traitor Bitch
5. Something about Vietnam

I'm pretty sure if you show up at a biker bar without those patches on your vest, nobody will talk to you. :D

I use to ride dirt bikes but don?t have the temperament to ride street bikes.

I see the loud pipes issue the same as running headers and straight pipes on a car. Sure it sounds cool for a while but nobody want to listen to it all the time, that?s why there is a noise law. Motorcycles and cars should have to abide by the same noise laws.

As for helmets, I see it the same as the seatbelt law. I feel that minors should be required to where seatbelts and helmets. Adults should be able to make up there own mind. I?m a strong supporter of wearing seatbelts and helmets, I just not a big fan of more laws.

Well there is alot of new wanna be hardcore bikers out there. You can tell some of them by there nice new white white T-shirt, and there black vest over it, and it can be 100 degree`s outside, and they don`t have any patches.

Isn't there some sort of federal funding attached to helmet laws?

I'm fairly liberitarian/darwinist on the whole helmet law thing. Just like seat belts or drug laws. If somebody isn't smart enough to take care of themselves, why should "we" do it for them.

On the pipes....I've had enough. It's getting to the point that I can't sit outside to eat at most restaurants downtown or carry on a conversation while walking down the street because of all the morons and thier open pipes.

Not yet, but the insurance industry has been pushing for one.

Which is exactly why this law is being proposed. So all of you who put aftermarket (but not obnoxious) pipes on your bikes can thank all of those immature, self-centered assholes riding through the city on straight pipes for this law. Now you'll all have to go back to stock pipes, because a few dickheads couldn't control themselves and had to ruin it for everyone.

My Buell isn't as loud as the Harleys with straight pipes but it can get a little loud if I ride at high RPM's.

I will not change my aftermarket "can" because of this propsed law. Not gonna happen. :tisk:

If I get a ticket because I'm riding like an idiot downtown, then I deserve one.
