I've been looking at the market for an external flash. I've read excellent things about the Speedlite 430EX and it sounds like it would be near perfect for me right now.

My only concern is that I DO want to get a lot more indepth into photography. Maybe someday become "Amateur-Professional" at it.

With that in mind, the Speedlite 580EX seems to be more geared towards the more advanced features. I can always make use of the advanced features, but what really turned me on about this model was that it can be a slave/master, and the the recharge time is extremely fast.

MSRP wise...
430EX: $300
580EX: $500

Spend the extra money now and save later? Or be happy with an overall all around performer?

Also, if you've seen the 580EX for less than $450, shoot me a link!

I always like to go for the best equipment. My advice would be to save and buy the 580EX.

X2.
I was looking at the SB600 (Nikon) and waited 20 seconds and then got the
SB800 instead. :D

x3 - get the 580. When I get a DSLR, I'll definitely step up from my 420EX.

Awesome! Sounds like it's unanimous!

Now I just need to find it for as cheap as possible.

Holy crap!
Did Canon just come out with the 580EX model?
Even the Nikon SB-800 is only 300 bucks.

One of the salesmen at Wolf Camera told me the 420EX got better customer service ratings....four stars...while the 580EX only got three.

I wasn't sure though if he was just trying to sell the 420 since the 580 were on order. I think I'll take my own advice and just save up to the 580EX!

I was talking to the professional photogs here at work and they all said paying $600 for a flash was a bad idea...In that vein, they say the 420 is probably the better bet and that you shouldn't pay more than $200 to $300 for a good flash...

hmmm...
