I want this lens, and will probably pick up pretty soon. What do you guys think?

Some of the shots taken with it look amazingly sharp!

I have the Nikon 70-300 4-5.6 lens. It sits on a shelf collecting dust. The lens is pretty much useless above the 200-250 focal length. Very hard to hold still at 300mm (5.6 aperture).
I would suggest saving your money until you can afford the Canon 70-200 2.8L IS (I think you shoot Canon). You will be much happier in the long run and you will have a lens that gets used a lot. If you ever decide to sell it, you will get most of your money back.

Jocko, that was about the first lens that I came up with in my search for a 70-200/300mm lens.
Once I saw the price, I closed the link.
I love photography, but it's not a career. I just can't ever justify spending that much money on a lens!
I agree, it's a nice lens, but damn that's a lot of change!

I was afraid to look...but $300 doesn't seem too bad. The one I'm saving up for is just about $700.
I say go for it! Think of all the great shots you'll be able to take!

That Sigma seems like it would be a good lens. When I was looking for a good telephoto zoom lens I looked at the Canon 70-200 2.8L IS that Jocko mentioned. It would be a amazing lens to have. Then I looked at the 70-200 4L IS, at half the weight(3.25lbs or 1.65lbs) and $650 less expensive than the 2.8 it made more sense to me. Trying to keep the photo bag light I ended up with the Canon 70-200 4L IS and couldn't be happier. The images are very sharp, great autofocusing, and smooth even backround blur. You could also opt for the non IS version and save some money( IS is nice though:) ).

What do you guys think about wide angle lenses?
If your aim was a 10mm, would you get a 10-20mm zoom or just 10mm no-zoom?

Fixed lenses, for the most part, will have better image quality. Zoom lenses are more versitile. If you think you will be shooting it as wide as the lens can go most of the time, go with the fixed lens. If not, and you want some versitility, go with the 10-20mm. It depends mostly on what it will be used for and personal preference.

nice. so when can I borrow it? :flipoff2:
will it work on my Canon Rebel Xti?
my lense is the basic 18 to 55 mm. It would be cool to take some shots with a wider angle.

It works on all Rebels! And since I have an XT, it should be a perfect fit for yours too.
I'll have to let you know when you can borrow it. You just have the kit lens on yours right now?

yes sir! Just the standard kit that came with the camera. It's not a bad lense, but I would love a telephoto one. It would have come in handy this past weekend while I was trying to take some wedding shots. I was way in the back of the church trying to take photos of the couple getting married up front. Didn't work so well.
I think the Shutterbugs should have a meet and greet and bring their equipment so we can all try it out. MReetz has got some great equipment too since he's been photographing for years.

Let's plan it then. We could wheel up somewhere nice and take some shots! What do you think?

I created a new thread called "Shutterbug Shoot and Greet."
Give some suggestions of where we should go. The prettier the place, the better!
