I think it's interesting how photography seems to be a source of relief in my life when I need it now.
I've discovered recently that when I'm agitated, depressed or just not in my normally happy place, I feel the need to either take pictures or edit, or organize my photos. It feels good to have something positive to turn to when I'm not feeling my best. Being able to take good pictures or learn how to take better ones makes me feel competent and successful.
Is it that way for you? How does your photography affect you?

What you described as a 'release' is what music does for me.
I don't normally feel obliged to turn to my camera unless I'm really bored for some reason. I go through some pretty extreme phases with my camera. I can go 4 months without touching it, then for a solid week I will have a solid tan line on my neck from the neck-strap.
Now music... I can't go without it. I drive to work with music, I wake up to music, I relax with music. I understand the 'release' that photography has for you and I completely agree that it's wonderful you found that thing you can turn to. Everyone needs to find it, but not-so-often they actually do.

Wife mentioned a couple of days ago that I seem to be a lot more relaxed and happy when I am shooting pictures.
Been spending a lot of time behind the camera the last month.
It's also been helping me stay off the cigs.....3 weeks today. :D

I feel that too when I'm singing gospel music in my church choir. I'm still learning what being a Christian means to me...but I do know that I feel closest to God when I'm singing.
