Morning Shutterbugs...
An interesting issue came up in photoclass last night. How do you prefer to save or protect your work?
copy on cds, an external hard drive?
have numerous copies on numerous computers (ie, at both work and home?)
What do you do to make sure you don't lose something?

I upload my originals to flickr. Odds of them losing it are pretty slim, and I can get at them from where ever I may be (if I need a pic for work for example, which is happening more and more). That said, I also make periodic backups from my pc to dvd.

External HD. Too many gigs to put on discs.

Jocko, how big is your external HD?

I have a couple 220gig backup drives and a 120 pocket drive. I have between 30,000-40,000 images saved since I made the switch to digital.

wow! that's incredible! Know where I can get a good deal on an external harddrive?

I currently keep backups of all of my files on external hardrives as well. I have over 1TB of external storage.
There are a lot of places to get great deals on externals. But it depends on what type you want. USB, Firewire, E-SATA, and how big you want it, and if you want some added security for it. If you have E-SATA capability I would go that route, and I would also look into something that will give you security, RAID-5 is the best option for a home user, as you get the security for your files and you also dont lose a lot of storage space. Give me an idea of what you are looking for and Ill give you some links to goood deals.

Multiple hard drives.....lots of 'em.
I just brought another 600Gig RAID5 array online at home.
People might say it's a little overkill, but the hardware was free.
It's not the fatest, but it gets the job done.
My main machine (typing from it now) has 2 drives that are mirrored, and are at 120GB used. Those are connected to a gig network, so moving between machines is easy.
I am a total wirehead/nerd/propeller head. :flipoff2:

I'll be getting a tape drive online soon too...more free stuff.
Edit: resized a bit.....

One more thing.....
When I first saw this thread, I thought more about the copyright type stuff.
What is everyone doing in this respect?
I know that some of the software lets you embed a watermark or something.
I see lots of people that put their (c)blah.... on their pics, which I think is good as well. You can put information into the Exif data, but it's easy to strip out too.
Thoughts? Not trying to jack the thread, but's it's also protecting your work. :D

that's a good topic Luv Jeeps. I didn't even consider that I could do a trademark on my own pics...

So how can I get in on the free stuff? ;)
I agree, when I first saw the thread title, I was thinking copyright stuff too. Watermarks are what I use for images that I think people might really want.

so they are called watermarks instead of trademarks....how do you get 'em?
I think a discussion about watermarks is good too. Go ahead, hijack away!

I am sure you could trademark an image, but you would need to talk to a lawyer about that.

What stuff do you use to watermark your images?

Watermarks = faint overlay added to an image or document to make it more difficult to steal and use without appropriate permission.
Copyright = the exclusive right of a creator to copy, change, distribute, perform, display, sell, lend or rent their creations. Note that there is nothing you need to do to get a copyright. Anything you create is copyrighted by you the instant you create it unless you specifically give up that right (many companies require that you give up the copyright to anything you create while on company time, for example).
Trademark = A symbol, phase, or other device of some kind that is used to identify a company or one of its products. Trademarks must be formally registered to be protected by law.

a watermark does not (necessarily)provide legal copyright protection. It does however allow the viewers to see the source (web especially). ask your teacher about exif data.

Exif data can be stripped out of an image really easy, though.
You can get free software that will allow you to change it as well....dates/times, etc.
Edit: Thanks for the info Jake.

Bad thing about hard drives, even external ones is that they will EVENTUALLY fail...its not an if, its a when. I dont like taking those sort of chances. I do put all my photos on an external hard drive, but i also back them up on DVDs once a month or so. Its about the only fail safe way of ensuring your data is safe as long as you keep the disks in good condition. I stick mine in my gun safe.

A RAID-5 array is a pretty fail safe way of backing up your data as the chances of two of the drives going bad in it at the same time are slim. And I have dealt with lots of HD's going bad, I will continue to back my data up on the HD's as I can recover any data off a bad drive just fine. Done it more times than I can count.

alot of people do not watermark properly.... and just do it in a corner or a small area which makes it easy to photoshop out (not that ive done this or anything..)
You have to make the watermark cover the whole image, but most importantly the part of the image people might want to steal.
