The head photo editor ran into me today and said he's already heard about the great shots I've been taking for my class.

He wants to talk seriously about what I would need to do to become a professional photojournalist!

That's just out of this world! And it feels so....right....like it did when I was an intern at the Post, just that sense that this was what I was supposed to be doing at that time in my life. After all these years of feeling not complete, I finally found another missing piece of the puzzle!

That's way cool.....I would quit my job as a VP of IT and do photography in a heartbeat.

Last night I did my first double duty as both a reporter and a photographer. I spent about three hours interviewing folks for a story I'm working on about Denver dance venues.

Then I spent another hour or so taking shots. It was a lot of fun to be able to see the "news" from both perspectives. But I made a rookie mistake...

I got so caught up in taking the pics and saying "that's a cool shot" that I forgot to get the names of the peeps I was photographing! EEK!

I have a long way to go, I think....hehehehe

You definitely need releases for anything that will be going into print where people's faces are visibly identifiable.

Unless used for editorial purposes.

I got permission to take the shots from the club management. Now I have to convince the photo editor to run the pic even though I'm not a guild-approved photographer yet.

Of interest to me was the line:

The legal issues surrounding model releases are complex and vary by jurisdiction.

Better safe than sorry in my mind.

"...In short, photo journalists never need to obtain model releases for images they shoot for (or sell to) news or qualified editorial publications."

If you are in a public place that does not insinuate privacy, like a dressing room or bathroom, your picture may be taken without consent. This is protected by the constitution under freedom of speech. If this were not the case, the paparazzi would be out of business.

If you are selling the images for commercial use, then you need a release from the subject. Whether it be a person, place or thing.

Here's a good quick read...http://www.krages.com/ThePhotographersRight.pdf

Quick update: My union just started offering online courses to help journalists transition to more media technologies and digital revolution careers. They have scholarships for tuition and The Post will also reiumburse 50 percent of tuition costs for additional classes. I'll be taking Dig Photo and Digital Editing (where we get free 3 mo use of Photoshop CS2!) There's also courses for videography and web design, and Flash 8 which I've been told to take advantage of as well.

I think this is further proof where the journalism industry is moving toward. I'm glad the union is offering accredited courses for us to gain a new skill set.
