DAMN!
That's what that was - A few years ago I built a crazy-assed fixture that held 2-concentric fluorescent rings (6.5" and 12" IIRC) and had a 1/4" captive stud -- at the time I thought is was to retrofit some other light fixture
Nice trick - Knowing what it was (now), I wish the guy would'a let me put the bright-aluminum rings on it (I was thinking to add one for the outer tube - for protection)

These look more like cheap ring-flashes than a macro flash. I wonder if the light ring is too broad to be very usefull in macro photography.?.?
