Need software to convert .MOV files

Any suggestions on a good and cheap software to convert video files from a .MOV format to something more common? I use a Nikon SLR that will shoot 35 second videos but others can't view them unless they have the software.

I can upload to YouTube and they will host the video, but I don't believe you can download from YouTube.

Did :google: come up with anything? I know I did this in the past, but I can't remember what I used (Olympus did mov's too).

Thanks, I did Google, but didn't find what I needed. Microsoft will convert some files but not the .MOV ones. I hear QuickTime will work but that it's expensive and invasive.
