I finally sampled my (BIG) dubble this past weekend, and I was quite surprised. It has a very nice dark burgundy color, almost like looking at the sun through a piece of garnet. The head pours a slightly lumpy yet smooth tan color, but does not remain very dense at this time. It falls down a bit, but doesn't go away. I attribute this to it's young age. It has a nice aroma of malt and some esters and phenols, and also a bit of alcohol, the latter of which is more of an enticing smell than a warning. The flavor is a surprise. When it first touches the tip of your tongue it tastes of a bit of sweet malt, followed immediately by a few layers that are hard to label. A second sip will help. Oh, yeah, banana raisin nut bread with a hint of dark fruits, like prunes or figs. Take another sip, bigger this time, and let it sit on the tongue for a moment. Swallow, and draw a slow breath through your mouth so that the stream of air coasts across your tongue to heighten the taste, then slowly exhale through both your mouth and nose. Wonderful. Hey, where's that alcohol? Can't even taste it. The sweetness is either hiding it, or the alcohol is part of it. Dangerous. You would never know it holds 9.4% abv. Luckily its not a style that you would pick to quaff on a hot day, and reach for another and another to keep the heat at bay. This is a beer to be enjoyed with friends and good conversation. I'll bet it will be really good with some barbecued ribs! How convenient- we just bought a shiny new grill!
