I'm looking into building a kustom bike- not real sure if I'm leaning towards bobber or chopper style. anyone on the board have any experience building or any leads on a good donor? I'm thinking Yamaha XS650 or hondaCB750 or the like. Cheap is good- otherwise i'd be cutting up a Harley ;)

That was my first thought, but I'm having a hard time finding one on the cheap...

I know some won't agree, but Ive seen some nice Buell based choppers out there. Even a few frames built just for them.

Why wouldn't they agree? Your exactly right.
Just stay with a 02 and under, so you actually get a Harley VTwin.
You get over 100hp stock and they can be upgraded for more HP pretty easy.
You can also find them relatively cheap if you look hard enough.

I've been hunting craigslist for a while now for the perfect project. I have a ton of time, just not a lot of money. I would appreciate any links or leads you have MrC!

if your going to chop it up anyway i would try some of the bike salvage yards do a google search and see what people have. sometimes you can find some really nice old bikes that have been wrecked and totaled out because of minor damage.

Have you checked "steels" in Denver? I knew a couple people that picked up Minor damage bikes and rebuilt them.

Steels is/was a motorcycle scrap yard. It's located near red & Jerry's on Santa Fe. It might be Steeles, or steels, But I have been there and there was everything from old cruisers, to newer crotch rockets, a few home brew chopper projects, ATV's, and even a couple of amphibious 6 wheelers. Not sure if they are still in business.
