looking to get a new rifle and figured i would try out this new 17 HMR round. i'm trying to stay in the $200 and under range, wally world has a couple and sportsmans had one single shot for this price range. anyone have a couple cents they could throw in on the good, bad and ugly of cheaper rifles. ideally i would like a ruger but don't want to fork over $500 for a plinker. thanks for any input.

I have a SS laminate stock Savage .17 HMR. I also bought a plastic stocked blued pencil barrelled Savage for my father. They are pretty nice rifles for the money. You can't beat the performance of the .17 either...

I'd get the Savage bolt gun...

I have a Savage .22 (think it's called a Mark II IIRC) that is just a nice rifle. It was around $200. I've owned several .22's, and this one was extremely accurate right out of the box. Seems like they make one in .17 HMR, but I'm not 100% sure.

My boys have a Chipmunk 17, and you can't hit jack with it. I'm actually planning on taking it out today and seeing if something's wrong with the scope. It's a cool round, though- I think the rifle's just substandard. First time I shot one, I left an exit wound on a headshot cottontail to rival a .223 :D .

Another vote for Savage, I had a .223 Savage bolt gun that was very accurate. The trigger on it sucked, but Savage has since gone to a new trigger design, so I can't comment on their new triggers.

Both the Savage and the Marlin are great shooters. Recently Dicks has had the Savage with a laminated thumb-hole stock, accu-trigger, and a scope for $299, a great deal. If you go with the Savage make sure you get the one with the accu-trigger. If you get a Marlin you can get a Rifle Basix trigger for about $60 that will make it very nice.

I have the Marlin with the heavy barrel, laminated stock, and RB trigger, great shooter. I have taken prairie dogs out to 250 yards with it.

www.rimfirecentral.com has tons of info

ETA- the ammo isn't really cheap enough to be considered a plinker, you can find centerfire .223 just as cheap. I buy all my 17hmr from www.midsouthshooterssupply.com

Same for the savage I have one and for the money it's awsome. BSA make a scope for it call the sweet 17 great match.

Try Gander mountain. I really liked their service. I had attention from one of the two employees for over an hour and they knew I was just looking.

I've got a NEF single shot in 17 HMR. Great shooter, lots of fun, and under $200.
