[Let's try this again, and hope people don't get it killed. I deleted the first one because I was 99% sure it was going to happen.]

I have been using Photoshop for over 10 years now. Well, not really using it, so much as getting by with some basic tasks. For what I have done, Photoshop has mostly been overkill. Today I started learning some nifty photo retouching techniques. I picked up a copy of "The Photoshop Show" by Russell Brown, and have to say I am really impressed. He makes it easy, and the enclosed examples are really useful. You can find good, used copies pretty cheap.

I think my next purchase might be "The Photoshop CS2 Book for Digital Photographers".

Now to start putting some of this knowledge to use.

I have been lucky enough to be in jobs that use it. Their licensing allows for one copy to go home, as long as you aren't using them both at the same time.

It is more than a little frightening to be next to that thing on 6th Avenue in my Jetta. Luckily during rush hour he can't move very fast. I worry it is just going to collapse on itself or something. It looks quite precarious...

There is a technique outlined in the book for doing this and showing you how to match the colors of the sky and get rid of any artifacts from where the images line up.

Nice pic BTW - we have had some great sunrises over the past week, just haven't had a chance to get pics of any of them...

Not a bad job doing it manually. Up til now I have always just used the software that came with the camera. I'll probably try it on my own now, at least for anything that might be "striking".

Set the f-stop and shutterspeed manually, then you won't get the variances if the camera is doin it for you automatically.

Just found out yesterday that one of my classes may be canceled because they don't have enough people to fill it. But Digital 1 is comprehensive enough.

http://www.denverdarkroom.com/

Googling and reading photography books and shooting a brazialian shots is probably better and cheaper....but I'm taking the class because I learn better that way and I think it's a good chance to meet new people!

Digital 1 starts April 9 and meets from 6 to 9!

A few years ago, I took a couple classes through Colorado Camera. It was before I had my digital, so the classes I took were on using a 35mm SLR. I really enjoyed them and learned a lot. I guess their classes are affiliated with Red Rocks now, but I would definitely recommend these guys.

Canon Rebel XTI
Nikon Coolpix L3

I just purchased a universal memory card reader/writer that I can also use for my Motorola Q (which has a miniSD).

What else do I need to get started....

Next year I will by a new computer to compliment my photography and I'll need to buy a better printer as well. For now, I'm just buying appropriate accessories for the cameras and I'll work my way up later.

Tripod. I use an inexpensive one I got at Wally World or Target or something. Works well though. I also have a small, mini tripod with a long velcro strap I can use to mount it to different things (trees, poles, etc).
Camera bag that fits each camera and whatever accessories you have for it.
Extra rechargeable batteries, and a AC/DC charger if possible.
For the EOS, get a UV filter to put on the end of the lens.
Possibly a polarization filter if you are going to be outdoors a lot.
Good flash for the EOS (Canon Speedlite series).

If you expect to do a lot of flash photography, or flash tricks, review the info at http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/ before buying the flash. Get the right one to start with.

And believe me, having a flash you can use to bounce light at different angles is WAY better than using the onboard one.

As Skier said,

Filter for your lenses. 1A is perfect for protecting your lens. Another great filter for outdoor shots is a circular polarizer lens. Helps cut through the haze, and you can really make the blue in your skies pop.

Tripod for sure. Ritz (Wolf here I think) has some nice ones for pretty cheap.

Check out the Learning section at http://photo.net/ Great site. I've learned a lot from there.

6.0 is an OLD version of photoshop. I believe it is upgradable to CS2, which is what most pros use. Cost for the uprgade is around $300. There is also a newer version out called CS3.

There is a ton of info on how to use these programs on the net. Look into the links posted above.

Eric, see the statue of the Buddhist? The one taken at an angle with the light reflecting off the hand? See if you can erase the club lights in the upper right hand corner....

Thanks sweetie!

Ooops, I misunderstood which lights you were talking about :D I could probably take those out, but what would you put there instead? Lemme see.

What I like about this whole photography thing is the great sense of adventure and learning new things. It's not just about taking a good shot. Then you have to understand how to upload it, share it, edit it.

It's as if a whole new world is opening up for me!

You are not discouraging me at all. Yes, I am catching up. No I haven't been taking photos for years, but I am passionate about this and I am capable of learning new skill sets, Chester.

I found those photos last night and I was able to figure out the problem that caused the mix-up. I basically had two competing applications that were both trying to download pics at the same time. Somehow an Adobe Photoshop Album program was downloaded on the computer (probably some of my kid sister's doings). I got rid of one program and kept the one that's compatible with my camera.

Photoshop Album probably came with the camera too, or as part of some other application from Adobe - it comes with a lot of things now.

PictureProject came with the camera. The photoshop album had apparently been on the computer for a while but I never knew it was there. That's the perks when you have a communal house computer. Things get downloaded...

I have been lucky enough to be in jobs that use it. Their licensing allows for one copy to go home, as long as you aren't using them both at the same time.

Adobe licensing does not allow that, FYI.

Well, I think it looks a bit fake with the background just chopped out completely, so I tried it two different ways:

This just has a black background inserted with a little noise to try to make it look less "fake":

This just has the original background darkened and blurred slightly so it's not recognizable, but at least there is something still "there":

I don't use Photoshop at all, I use GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program), which is similar to Photoshop, but is free to use and modify to one's liking. It doesn't have some of Photoshop's high-end features, but it gets me where I want to go.

I knew that:

a) I had seen that recently
b) I checked this before installing that stuff at home.

Apparently CS3 was released today. I am thinking that since we bought the whole enchilada in the last 60 days, we should be able to get it as a free upgrade. My IT people are looking into it. That would be sweet.

I took this with a Cannon SD400 last night. I keep getting a couple pixels that are screwed up when I take large pictures and have to go in and fix them later. When I take a lower resolution this does not happen. You can see a red dot and a blue dot on her head and a few others if you look close. Any thoughts on what is causing this? They are not in the same place all the time and it is bugging me. Sorry for the huge pic but thats the only way you will see the problem.

ColoradoSkier

Dust perhaps? If they were always in the same location, I would suggest a couple dead pixels on the CCD... I see white ones in the lower left corner area too... Not sure.

Jocko
March 29th, 2007, 01:18 PM
I was thinking dead pixels too. A dirty/dusty sensor usually shows up as dark spots. I had some of both on my D100. If it is dead pixels, there should be a program to get rid of them. There is for Nikon atleast. Google "hot pixel remap".

what are the main differences between Photoshop and Photoshop Elements....besides the massive difference in price of course...?

ColoradoSkier
April 24th, 2007, 11:05 AM
PS Elements will probably do everything you need/ want it to now. PS is overkill for most people.

These aren't really image management tools though. These are image creation/ manipulation tools. I am sure Elements has some sort of gallery management built-in, but for a true image management solution, you would be looking at Adobe Lightroom - http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshoplightroom/

You can buy photosop 7 and the CS2 upgrade for $300 on EBAY. Just make sure you can register it in your name. There are several sellers who have been doing this for a long time.

Elements is a great place to start for around $70-$100. Don't let the haters tell ya different.

CS3 is the newest version. You will get a better deal on the CS2. Later, if needed, you can always upgrade to CS3.

Baby steps.

You can also download any of these from adobe's website and try them out for a month. I don't think you get the full versions though.

$1500 and you too can have one! Actually, for what you're doing, it makes no sense to get any of the software suites. You'd never use all the other stuff it comes with. Just get a student copy of Photoshop.

I personally have access to Photoshop and I still use GIMP anyway, which is free. It does all the things I need in a photo editing package.

If you want to learn Photoshop so you'll be able to use it in a work environment, I'd get the educational priced Photoshop Extended version so you can learn all the different parts of it (this is $300).

I'd definitely get GIMP over Photoshop elements though.

The licensing does allow you to install it at a remote location, as long as the two installations won't be used concurrently...

The license only allows the primary user of the software at their work to also install it on one portable or home computer. So my media guy can can take a copy home for his computer, but I can't.
