I was going to try and enter my beer into a couple of competitions this year and so far have missed my dates. But, now that there are two more coming up, I see this:

Comp 1.:

A single recipe form (http://www.bbriggs.vcn.com/8secform.html)must accompany each entry.

and

Entrants agree to allow the High Plains Drafters and/or the Liquid Poets the right to publish recipes without compensation. All entries become High Plains Drafters and/or the Liquid Poets property.

This is utter BS. You never ask for a persons recipe and you never ever lay claim to it as your own. :flipoff:

Comp 2.:

Every bottle must be 10 to 14 ounces in volume,

:( all of my beer is in 16 or 22oz bottles...

Both of these are in CO and it would have been cool to go while they were judging. The second one is part of the AHA National Homebrewers Association. You have to get your beer to a first round location and hopefully make it. The second round is in CO in June...

Actually, you'll find that the majority of beer competitions insist on being provided with the recipe. I agree that it's BS, but that is the way it is.

providing a list of ingredients would be fine with me, but asking for the recipe, publishing with out compensation and saying it becomes their property is over the top. All the other comps just ask for an ingredients list to make sure it fits the style...

edit: typing on a phone keyboard is brutal..

If you place in one of those competitions, the sponsoring club will usually credit you with the recipe. They say it becomes their property so that they can publish it on their website. I have entered and placed in a few such comps, and I still own my recipes. Besides, just because they say they own it doesn't mean they hold copyrights to it. No one can copyright flavors. Just enter.

Uh, yes, actually they do. If you sign the agreement that says that it becomes their property then you have just granted them what is known as "all rights." They can copy it, sell it, publish it, whatever, and you have no legal grounds for demanding either credit or payment.

I'll tell you what, send me some of your beers and I will judge them. I don't even need the recipe and I'll take large bottles too.

They reserve the right to publish the recipe. The BOTTLED ENTRIES become their property, not the recipe. These entry regulations are quite common.

Good point. I was thinking in terms of the entry form (which includes the recipe) being a part of the entry. It specifically says, though, that an entry consists of two bottles of beer.

So, I guess you are just granting them first rights to the recipe, and retaining all other rights yourself.

That's how it usually is. The Liquid Poets are a pretty reputable club, and anything sketchy like that would be unusual.

To me, it is the way they worded it. I checked on the AHA site and here is what they say:

E. Recipe Requirement
A recipe is not required to enter the first round, however, if your entry advances to the second
round, you must submit a recipe. Upon entering this competition, entrants agree to allow (at no
cost) publication of their recipe by the Brewers Association or any of its divisions in any
Brewers Association publication. Entrants will receive all due credit.

That to me is night and day difference.

Funny you mentioned that... I was just checking on this thread to add that the Nat'l winners ALWAYS have their recipes printed in Zymurgy.

Why so secretive with the recipe? What's the worst that's going to happen, somebody will brew their own batch and enjoy it too? I always post my recipes for the world to see...if the beer is any good.

Long line of cooks. You never share your recipes with anyone unless you trust them, or you are dying. :D

I have no problem sharing my recipes, but I spend time research and building them and just coughing them up goes against my grain. lol, I said going against my grain.

Hell, Jeepindog has my a copy of my Imperial Stout!

It would be a good beer if you'd ferment it with 3787. :flipoff2: When are you gonna brew it? As far as giving out your recipes goes, you can always lie. You used 7 oz of Crystal 40*? Say it was 10. You used 1 1/2 oz of Amarillo as FWH? Say it was 2 oz of Simcoe at 60. Etc. Don't give them YOUR recipe if it means that much to you, rather, give them an approximation.

When we get back from Moab. I want to brew that, and my IPA. Bottle the Imperial and keg my IPA.
