acejeeper
March 12th, 2007, 03:12 PM
I saw it this weekend and it was awesome. My buddy sent me this review of the movie and it basically sums it up for me....

--------------
I just saw a movie that?ll give your eyes boners, make your balls scream and make you poop DVD copies of THE TRANSPORTER. It?s called 300. I don?t know what the title has to do with the movie, but they could?ve called it KITTENS MAKING CANDLES and it?d still rule.

It?s about these 300 Greek dudes who stomp the sugar-coated shit out of like a million other dudes. I have a feeling that a lot of high school sports coaches are going to show this film to their teams before they play. Also, gay dudes and divorced women are going to use screen captures for computer wallpaper.

The movie takes place about a million years ago, and it?s sort of like a prequel to SIN CITY. Except way less guns and cars but twice as much skull splitting. If you watch this movie and go into a Taco Bell, and say to the cashier, ?I need some extra sauce packets? guess what? You?re getting twenty sauce packets because your face will punch him in the brain.

I can?t spoil the plot because THANK GOD THERE ISN?T ONE. Just ass kicking that kicks ass that, while said ass is getting kicked, is kicking yet more ass that?s hitting someone?s balls with a hammer made of ice but the ice is frozen whiskey.

TWO COOL THINGS ABOUT THE MOVIE AND ONE THING I DIDN?T LIKE:

COOL THING ONE:
HEAVY METAL DURING BATTLE SCENES

Who gives a shit if the music isn?t historically correct? LORD OF THE RINGS could?ve used some Journey. This movie has that chu-CHUNG kind of metal that you hear in your head when your shift supervisor at Wetzel?s Pretzel is telling you that you?ll have to stay for clean up and you wish you had a sock filled with quarters in your hand.

COOL THING TWO:
FOES, MINI-BOSSES AND A BIG BOSS

Basically, the Greek dudes are fighting these Persian dudes, but the director, who must have a dick made of three machine guns, does it all like a video game. The Greeks fight every death metal video from the last ten years. There?s wave after wave of giants, freaks, ninjas, mutants, wizards, and a hunchback who looks like he?s got Rosie O?Donnell on his back

Would I have been happy if Dom DeLuise from HISTORY OF THE WORLD, PART I had shown up? Maybe, but this movie more than makes up for that glaring oversight.

NOT SO GOOD THING:
DUDE NUDITY (?DUDE-ITY?)

These are Greek times, when there were a lot of naked women around. And there are some naked women in this film, but almost every naked woman scene has a muscular dude giving the screen an ass picnic. Dude-ity is something directors put in their movies so people will think they?re serious, I guess, and not just throwing in naked hotties.

Any directors reading this ? IT?S OKAY TO JUST THROW IN NAKED HOTTIES.

Can?t someone make a movie about naked Amazons and call it PAUSE BUTTON?

My final analysis is 300 the most ass-ruling movie I?ve seen this year, and will probably be the King of 2007 unless someone makes a movie where a pair of sentient boobs fights a werewolf.

March 12th, 2007, 03:17 PM

I think thats what sets it apart from other movies is how he does it. I thought it was one of the most beautiful looking films out there. Even with all the CG, it didnt look too fake like Star Wars did.

I saw it and I didn?t particularly care for it. It didn?t suck, but seeing it once was good enough for me.

The thing that bugged me was the way they chose to show the beasts and the mystics in the movie. I know it fits with the graphic novel style, but I didn?t really like it. They also took some liberty with the plot and it isn?t anywhere near historically accurate. That?s okay too. Ultimately, half the movie was fight scenes and that?s just too much for my tastes.

Was it me or was the picture grainy as hell? Maybe that's a product of the unique filming style that they used.

Awesome movie. Saw it opening night. Might not have been totally historically accurate, but one thing they got right was Spartans attitude, basically they were soldiers & men first, no room for cowards. Rule was you either came home with your shield or on it. No retreat or surrender. If you retreated first thing you dropped was your shield & as soon as you got home without your shield everyone knew you were a coward. Every time they were given a chance to surrender they basically told the Persians to make peace with their gods as they were gonna die next. You might be bigger & stronger but I will still win. You might kill me but alotta your people are gonna die before that happens. I want to see it again.

frank miller doesnt have a "cinematic style", he is instead a graphic novelist. when his novels are recreated in a movie they use styles that are meant to portray the graphic novel it is based on, hence the use of color to highlight certain things, and the way the scenes are laid out (especially the use of slow motion within scenes).

now, for those who do like it, you should check out the graphic novels for sin city and 300. i dont think 300 is available in the individual volumes anymore, but they combined them all into a nice (expensive) full color hardback. sin city on the other hand can still be found in the original 7 volumes (3 of which were in the movie)

Check the history on how the Spartans were raised. Hell, even the babies were left to die if they were found to be inferior. Brutal society, I kind of like it...

That movie was great! Dare I say I thought it was beautiful....inspite of the violence and the awesome dudity (Gerald Butler...yummy) I thought the background and colors were lovely. I enjoyed it when they slowed down the fight scenes. If a guy is getting his a$$ beat, I want to be able to see it clearly, unlike the incredibly blurry scenes from the Bourne Supremacy where you couldn't see anything. Those Spartan fighting scenes were awesome...

:D I do concur, the bewbers were very nice, but I do have to concede the pointy factor was a bit much on the queen. Tone them down just a tad, and we'd be set

I can't wait for Spidey3. I'll definately be going to see that one on the IMax (and probably a couple more times on the regular screen :flipoff2: )

Holy hell, I just saw it on IMAX, the death and destruction is galactic with blood spurts 25 feet high. I think a kid next to me ACTUALLY was struck by a stray arrow but I wouldn't dare peek out from behind my cardboard shield. I wet my pants at least twice. In a fit of excitement I stabbed the woman behind me and threw her carcass into a 50 foot tall pile of dead bodies, it was a great experience. The movie wasn't too bad either.

Leather undies and cloaks - let battle commence

By Sam Leith

Notebook

Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American
public, as Mencken's saying almost has it. Heh heh. Cruel, but true.

And never truer than in the case of 300, the film adaptation of Frank Miller's
comic book about the Battle of Thermopylae.

I went to see it weeks ago - being a comics nut, an enthusiast for all things
violent and stupid in cinema, and the friend of a film critic who happened to
have a spare ticket for a preview.

My film-critic friend Larushka and I reeled out of the preview screening more
or less breathless with laughter. Here was a film, we agreed, that had
nothing whatsoever to recommend it.

The script was risible, the CGI absurd, the acting as hammy as a boiled and
brined pig's leg, and the historical accuracy sketchy at best.

Did the ancient Persians - really, truly, swear to God - have orcs, ninjas and
battle rhinos in their army?

Did Leonidas really have a beard that looked like that, and an accent that zig-
zagged crazily between Russell Crowe and Sean Connery? This, we agreed,
was going to sink without trace.

Anyway, the damn thing has now broken pretty much every box-office record
going. And it has given rise to what Mrs Merton used to call a heated debate.

Before returning to the old game of kidnapping bootnecks on the Shatt al-
Arab waterway, the government of Iran denounced 300 as "anti-Iranian"
and "the result of cultural and psychological warfare".

This is, apparently, because it's a film in which the villains are Persians -
some of whose descendents are, presumably, Iranians, or at least live in
roughly the same part of the world (2,500 years later, give or take).

So, obviously, it's anti-Iranian propaganda.

In America, too, brows have been beetling over what it all means. Most
stupid people seem to agree that it's some sort of allegory. It's about war. It
must, therefore, be about Iraq.

Unfortunately, so oblique is its message that nobody is able to agree on
whether it's the Spartans or the Persians who are supposed to stand for
America.

The key thing about 300, actually, isn't its international politics, but its
sexual politics.

It's a film that manages to be profoundly homoerotic and profoundly
homophobic at the same time - a classic instance of what Freud called
a "reaction-formation".

Our Spartan heroes are a gang of hardcore muscle Marys, all firmly in denial -
equipped with rock-hard pecs, abdominal muscles so super-segmented they'd
have to count as eight-packs, and dressed in nothing more than swooshy red
cloaks and leather underpants. These are the heteros, apparently.

Presenting a threat to the future of all red-blooded Spartan manhood,
meanwhile, are the Persians. They have multiple piercings. They have
anything-goes orgies.

Their leader, Xerxes, is kind of buff, but has a suspicious tan, an all-over
body wax, painted-on eyebrows, and exactly the sort of pout that was the
making of Terence Stamp in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

So the battle is, basically, butch v fem, and at stake (according to the
dreary nonsense surrounding the movie) is the future of civilisation.

Larushka, my film-critic pal, found herself shortly afterwards at one of those
group interviews to promote the film. She asked David Wenham - a bluff
Aussie actor who plays one of the Spartans - whether, looking around himself
at his colleagues, buffed and oiled and clad in their leather Speedos and their
strappy sandals, he at no point thought: "How super-gay is this?"

Wenham laughed: "I'd be lying if I said no." Then he said something along the
lines of "but don't print that". So, obviously, that was the first thing she
printed.

And quite right, too. Dammit. I have argued myself round. I find myself, now,
starting to wonder if 300 is, in fact, an important window into our cultural
unconscious. God help us.

Sweet, I have to go see this. Needless to say, the wife isn't too interested. I'll get around to it sometime! Anyway, the reason I'm posting is that I loved the review posted by acejeeper, and it reminded me of THIS (http://www.realultimatepower.net) website. Same type of humor...
