Still no console... ;)
Sounds like quite a rig. Let us know how the HDD performance works out.

I have a couple of copies that I own and aren't being used. I was thnking about Vista, but so far have seen no reason to make the jump. The only thing I may do is add more memory...I was doing some research though, and I have to hope my 8800 will fit! lol

Well, I just realized that my system is fubar'd to some degree. The Shuttles only have two slots. My new 8800 GTX is a two slot card. That means my sound blaster audio card won't fit... Bah!
Going to look at different cooling solutions and see if I can't still get my sound card in there. Thankfully, it isn't that long...

Well, I already had these parts:
Intel 6700 Dual Core 2.66GHz, 1066 MHz FSB, 4MB L2 Cache
2 gig Crucial Balistix DDR2 800
(2) 10k WD Raptor 75 gig drives (gonna try R-0 here)
PNY nVidea GeForce 8800 GTX Video Card
Sound Blaster XtremeGamer Audio Card
XP SP2
And after doing some research, I don't think the Shuttles will cut it. So I canceled the Shuttle and went with this board:
ASUS P5N32-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131073) instead.
I need a case and am looking at this one:
Antec Nine Hundred (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811129021). Just gotta do something about the lit fans...

You should upgrade to Vista since this is a brand new system. Why would you want to stick with old technology and have to go through the hassle of upgrading later anyways? Since you are buying all this new hardware you could get a oem version for cheap.

I talked with Mike at length about Vista and his suggestion was to stay away from it until the have SP45 out for it...

That sounds a little harsh to say the least. There is a bit of learning curve to it, but in all honesty it is just like 3.1 -> 95 or 98 -> 2000 or 2000 -> XP. It is just the next step in the Windows evolution.

I would not be toooooo adverse to it when they optimize it more so it's not such a resource hog and developers get time to catch up with drivers.

I think Mikes biggest problem was with the 64bit version, not the 32bit. Microsoft even states themselves that the 64bit version is not for everyone, and that the driver support is going to be tough because in order to use a driver for x64 it needs to be signed by Microsoft. The warning label on the Ultimate edition for x64 said something like "For experienced and hardcore users only", which to me translates to, "Don't do anything that would be considered fun with x64".
The driver support for x32 is actually pretty good. My one year old pc had no problems. And a brand new pc should be good to go.

Well again, I am running x64 Business edition with no problems. Creative is lagging at releaseing production drivers for my X-Fi but it has been a while since I checked. And I don't buy that warning label...

Depends on your definition of fun....:D;)
Ill pass on Vista for a while. Let some of the bugs get worked out, and a service pack or two ships. Now I have heard good things about the new office.

Yeah, Mike has a test machine to develop with. He had 64bit on it and nothing but trouble. So they pulled back to 32.
For those that don't know, Mike is my brother and has been developing since the early 80's. This is his trade so I tend to trust his opnions... I'll hold on Vista until late SP1 and maybe even SP2.

We haven't had any trouble running 64 bit solaris 10... ;)
And developing is also my trade... I think....:D
No vista for me...

Heres a reason to upgrade to vista:
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6167353.html?action=convert&om_clk=latestnews&tag=latestnews;title;2
For you non-Xboxers, Live is pretty awesome. Its like the best of xfire, ASE, email, voice mail, and online gaming all tied into one. I'm a little mixed that silver members will be able to play online through vista for free. Sure its great that you don't have to pay to play, but I think having gaming servers hosted outside of the live network will take away from some of the quality.
I hope they start to release some more of the Xbox live arcade games for the PC. There are some pretty good games out there for way cheap. Geo Wars was already released, but I hear it is missing many of the features that the 360 version had.
Anyways, I like what MS is doing by unifying the 360 and PC and making services available for both platforms.
