Is an amazing camera! I opened the box this morning.... and it took all of my strength to put it down and go get ready for work!
Now I need advise....where do I go to get amazing pictures? I'm hoping to start going out every weekend to some place new in the state. I've lived here for almost 11 years, but I spent most of that time on my career. It's time to relax and be a tourist.
So....where should I go first? What should I look for?

I try to take my camera with me everywhere I go - you never know when an opportunity will present itself. You have a great vantage point from where your offices are, so thats as good a place as any to start.
Some other places to keep up to date with:
http://www.photographyblog.com/
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1010 (this one can give you all kinds of good info)
I know you have photobucket, but you might want to consider www.flickr.com - there are all kinds of forum groups on there for all kinds of photography...

Yes...some night shots from my building would be great. We also have great views of the mountains and the surrounding areas.....

My wife used to just carry her camera everywhere with her and shot anytime something caught her eye. You never know when a good one will present itself.

I'm weary of carrying it around....I have my little pic and shoot Nikon on me all the time now....but do I really want to be carrying the Rebel around with me?

The Digital Rebels are pretty durable. I carry a first gen one in my Jeep everywhere. I use a small camera back pack and clip it to the front seat just behind the calves of my legs. It does not get in the way and no one knows its there in case I walk away from the Jeep to visit mother nature. It has been 3 years of this and the camera holds up great. I mention this because you never know when a good photo op is in front of you and this way you always have your camera. I have a new 12 MP Canon SLR Digital now but keep the Rebel in my Jeep just in case.

I carry a sony cybershot around in my pocket. The expensive camera's go along in the truck, jeep, kayak, ATV etc but in a Pelican case. Waterproof and can take a serious hit without damaging the camera. I got some amazing wildlife pic's by just being lucky and having a camera. Lots of Elk, Deer, Moose, Black Bear and Grizzly pics. The EOS Digital cameras are nice. If you go with a bigger lens think about getting the image stabilization. Nice to have for a longer shot without a tripod.

Hitch another ride on some wheeling trips.
Some of the best scenery out there is inaccessible by car.

It's a good camera, but you will need to learn how to use it manually, if you want great shots. The point and shoot functions are ok, but not going to cut it if you want really good photos. Mine doesn't focus spot on, especially 4-wheeling shots (it seems slow) and the light metering isn't all that accurate.
I spent some time with my light meter and compared shots, setting up manually with the light meter yielded much better results

My bro has had his digital rebel for a few years now, and carries it quite often. Took a few great picts atop Mt. Evans this summer actually. Im eventually going to get one. He has the add on batter with the extra grip which is REALLY nice.
Oh and he took some swell pictures from BML last summer too.

good point, some great views out there just waiting to be shot where typical cameramen/women (in cars) won't see.
Im heavily debating buying a good camera. Lord knows I have plenty of uses for the money but I love taking photographs and hate using my crappy Nikon to do it.

there seems to be a lot of debate about whether to buy a Nikon or a Canon....we eve had that issue in the newspaper where a photog editor wanted to switch all the Nikons over to Canons. That guy got the boot and the new editor is making everyone stay with Nikons!
oh the drama...

I have no idea how good/not good Nikon's higher end stuff is.
Mine in truth was pretty nice, 5 years ago.

You get the 30D? You're right, carrying it around would be a pain, I don't really like to unless I have a backpack or something. You'll love it, my camera goes with me anywhere I go on the weekends, sometimes around here in Boulder great photos just seem to happen. Have fun learning about the camera, I keep learning more and more things everyday.
Ohhh and MonkeyBomb, do you have a link to the Pelican case? Never heard of it and it sounds like something I need.

While you are learning, anything should be a fair game subject. It takes time to learn what you really like to do. I happen to like macros, and this was one of the first ones I tried.

Best time for shooting great colors in early in the morning and at dusk. :D

I thought I saw somewhere that the SD900's can be had for $199 now - is that a good deal (is it a good camera)?

macros are alot of fun. Caught this little guy crawling up my shoe last year in Pennsylvania.

I can't quite place it. The columns make me think it's not in the US. The shape of the mountains looks a little too rugged to be anything around here. The Alps? Himalayas?

Most times its the person holding the camera, not the camera itself that takes great pics. The biggest tip anyone could give is to remember the rule of thirds. If you do that, your pictures will turn out great.
Second rule is to take pictures of everything. Not just scenery. Action shots, macro, scenery, funny stuff. Mix it up. Get some memory cards and just shoot.
last is to invest in a good tripod and a remote shutter.

Having a tripod has been a huge help, thats for sure. Don't have a remote shutter per se, but my camera did come with a wireless remote, so the result is the same.

A good lens is as important, if not more so, than a good camera.
Cheapie lenses will quickly ruin your photography interests. I know it did for me.
