The title pretty much says it all: I'm looking to have a match-grade barrel fitted to my Springfield 1911 and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good (excellent) gunsmith around CO Springs.
TIA.

I didn't use him myself, but when I had a problematic 1911, I was referred twice to John Kelley: 303.840.2372.
Downside: He's in Parker, you're in springs.

Thanks  - sounds like he'd be a good 'Plan B' if I can't find someone closer to home.

Have you considered letting Springfield drop a match grade barrel in there?
They have decent high end stuff. (Or do you have the barrel already?)
Edit: Better yet, WC will do custom work on SAs.

I figured having a competent local gunsmith install a Bar-Sto barrel should be as good, if not better than, having Springfield or Wilson do the work. I also don't feel like messing around with shipping and paying the shipping costs. I haven't bought the barrel yet.

Believe it or not, it is actually MUCH easier than you think. (Edit: Probably would take a fraction of the time compared with a local smitty).
As to your goal, I guess it depends on the gunsmith. I think you'd be hard pressed to find better work than WC, though. I haven't dealt with them.
I've found shipping back and forth to SA to be a breeze. I wish Kimber was as easy. :(

Call springfield. You may be able to just drop a barrel in your model. If not They should have a list of dealers in your area. Most dealers have gunsmiths on staff.

My guess is that a match grade barrel is going to need to be fitted. I'd want it to be in perfect sync with the locking lugs and bushing, anyway.

I took one of my guns to the Shootin Den on Fillmore. They send it to a guy in Castle Rock. He does awesome work but takes a good bit of time.

Do you know the name of the guy in Castle Rock?

Hi,
I had this guy Marc Morganti (not local but shipping is easy) rework a Ruger SP101 for me and he does great work on 1911's also. His Web site is: http://www.geminicustoms.com/. Great customer service. Probably be faster than anyone local.
I tried the Castle Rock Gunsmith (can't remember the name either) a year or two ago but the wait list was like six months.

Jim,
When I sent my gun off to him through Shootin Den, it took forever as said above. I later found out the old man had a brain aneurysm. Luckily, he came out of it ok. He had my gun a couple of months. I felt like such an arse asking where my gun was not knowing his condition. Anyways, I would call the Shootin Den and they should point you in the right direction.

Seriously, Springfield was UBER fast (and easy) the three times I sent my junk there.
Kimber was quick too.
I have no idea on WC, but I can't wait to send my TLE there for a few quick items once I wear it more (the finish, that is).
