The boy has finally started thinking about college for next fall, and he is looking at Mesa State. Anyone on here attend that fine institution, and if so, what are your overall thoughts and comments?

Thanks in advance!

I'm going there in the fall and can't wait! Visit the campus, its really nice with new dorms. Really nice people down there too. There's a visitation thing (food, meeting people etc) going on on saturday, might wanna call and see what it's about. I'll be going, but I'm not sure if it's for people who are for sure attending or for anyone.

And oh yeah, the dorn I signed up for has 32" plasmas in the "living rooms" :D

I went to Mesa from 94-98. Great school with smaller sized classes. Close to Moab, Powderhorn, great weather most all year.
Those were the best days of my life...

I've enjoyed it so much, that I still haven't graduated. There are a lot of changes going on. Most I believe for the good.

What, you don't want him coming up here to Boulder? My fianc? can keep an eye on him for you if you'd like - you know: redheads look out for each other.

Seems like a good school, nice campus and this is a decent town too. The school is growing like crazy, and enrollment is way up every year. They also just expanded on their classes, if I'm not mistaken they are now offering pre-med among other things.

My kids will go there way before they go to my alma mater (UT), or CU for that matter.

The academic portion is getting better. I only have one complaint with the school. The faculty. They are WAY WAY underpaid. One of was telling me after 11 years at MSC, she is barely making 31K. They are definitely there because they love to teach, not for the money. Another biology profs had 4 offers after graduating, three were research related at Cornell, Harvard, and Yale. She choose teaching. And finding new teachers are extremely difficult. My chemistry teacher is a civil engineer who doesn't know anything about chemistry.

Also my other rant is if I am not early within 5 minutes to physics or statistics, there are no seats available and you have to sit on the stairs.

She's obviously not a professor then. Must be an "instructor" or whatever stupid title they have when they won't call them a full professor. Trust me, there are a lot of very highly paid faculty there. But, like at most colleges and universities, the highly paid faculty doesn't spend much time in the classroom; they leave that to "instructors" and grad students.

After working in the business world for many years I wouldn't last a week at a college. I can't count the number of times Kathy has come home and told me about something the college is doing. My standard reply is "that's stupid."

True story: I helped, along with a few other people at the DOE site here a number of years ago, develop the curriculum and lessons for some environmental engineering classes. When we talked to the college about having us teach them on a part time basis they said we weren't qualified because we didn't have PhD's. Yeah, we can write the material, but we aren't smart enough to teach it.

I went to Western State, so I am familiar with a smaller college and the good/bad that goes along with it. Just never had many dealings with Mesa, other than an occasional road trip from Gunnison to 1). warm up, and 2) watch the Mountaineers thrash their football team :D

In four years, nonetheless. Without a single day in detox or the county jail. Hot Chocolate and Schnapps in a thermos made the trek to class enjoyable on some days :D

CU Boulder was great to attend. I passed on Mines, Univ of TX, and Naval Academy to go to CU. No regrets.

"Fight CU down the field, CU must win......fight fight for victory, CU knows no defeat, so roll up a mighty score, never give in, shoulder to shoulder we will fight, fight, fight, fight, fight!!!"

Betting they haven't sung that with much gusto in the football stadium the past couple of years. :flipoff2:

Correct, unfortunately. And the only gusto there's been was liquid gusto.

But we're on the right track to make some noise this year. They still are, and always have been, the best college football team in Colorado.:stirpot:

I mean, sure CSU got lucky a couple of times, but we all know even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile.

Flame suit on- work is slow today, so bring it.

Wifey went to CSU, and we don't speak one day each year. She says I'm an a$$ when it comes to Buffs football. She's right.

Here's one for the CU grads on the board: it will give you chills!

I would chime in and tell you that I remember all the chest beating and armwaving while supporting the mountaineer football team, but in reality, 1) I probably wasn't sober at the games 2) after my sophomore year, I was one of the ballboys at all home games (it paid pretty well, and the sidelines are the best seat in any stadium). :D

as for Mesa, since it is a smaller school, have him check on transferrable credits to one of the larger schools in the state, CSU, CU, etc. I know when I was in school, they didnt offer a BS in engineering, so many kids went there for 2 years and then transferred to a school with a real engineering school. I took a few credits at fort lewser and almost took a composition class that would not have been accepted by the engineering school at CSU, glad I didnt, but I would have if i didnt check it out.

My sister went to Mesa, so if he needs to know any good party spots, let me know and I will get her in touch with him.

Jeff... I never knew. And to think that I've considered sharing a tent with you.

Back to the topic on hand: I think that Dan would flourish at a place like Mesa and become a retarded frat boy at a place like CU. It'd be nice having him close since he's such a good kid, but he'd get more out of the smaller classes out west.

And would be a good place to visit on my way to Moab.

Assuming I get in, it's gonna be Mesa or Western for me. If I get in to both it will be Western, but Mesa would be ok too.

Looks like I may be seeing some of you guys there

I've never attended MSU. My wife has supervised student teachers from there as a mentor teacher. This is at the elementary level. She was not impressed with the teaching program and especially the supervising professor. She felt his grasp of what is happening in the classroom was unrealistic (especially for new 1st year teachers) and out of touch withc many of the current teaching methods.

Just my two cents

Well, Dan got accepted to Mesa State!! Now all he has to do is figure out how to pay for it ;)

I'd still like him to consider Western State, since his parents both graduated from there, but I think I'd rather visit him in Grand Junction in the winter, than in Gunnison.

I think he's deciding on where to live on campus, and all that other fun stuff now.

Convince him to go to Western!

Im in the process of getting everything set up ( paperwork! )

Oh and tell him congrats!

My HS grades were/are less than stellar but I think my ACT score leveled it out and I was relieved when I got to accepted.

Congrats! And yeah, our weather is soooooo much better than Gunnison's in the winter. But then, you can say that about almost anywhere else in the country. :silly:

Kathy has worked there for the 10 years we've lived here, so if you need info about the college or 'Junction let me know.
