Here is one of 3 Porsche 914's I own.
This one I keep in California.
I also have a Daily Driver in my avatar, and I just bought a third as a Vintage Race Car project

haha, at least there aint that many of them around. My buddy in Las Vegas has a brand new Evo MR, it's an awesome car. All I hear from him is, when are you driving your subi out here so we can hit the dry lake bed and take the canyons to LA? :D
I looked at some evos, but I couldn't afford a new one. I did not want to buy a used one, from what I've heard. The warrranty is virtually no good unless your the original owner. And sometimes your screwd anywho. The subis are a little nicer for day to day driving too.
I got mine certified used, with an extended 100k warranty. It's stayin stock for now. And it is owe so fun, regardless of the times you get smoked by an evo, but ya know what? Thats still fun lol.
The 07 sti's will hang w/ an evo though, the difference is the early stis are geared hella short. You can only run 4th gear through 100 mph means your having to shift at the quarter mile mark. With an evo you can run 4th through 117 mph or so. Through 3rd and 4th they pull away. The new 07 sti's are geared a little longer then the evo's so it should even it out some. Evo's got a better snail though stock. My buddy's MR with a ecu flash and full turbo back etc pulls 350 whp.

I luuuurrrvvee it. It is a little abused right now though... I like to take it out on road courses, and I had a little off-track excursion a few months ago into some tires... Nothing too serious, but it'll teach me to be mindful of track temperatures. Now that all the snow is melting away, I might drive it over and have it fixed up.
Neither my Z nor my Jeep is really much of a daily driver :)

Dana,
Have you ever tracked your car with the local PCA?

Let me know if you need details on how to......
No. My brakes aren't big enough, my turbo is too small, my suspension is not stiff enough. Even worse I have never adjusted the camber plates and I can't get the car out of the driveway with the front air damn on it.
In all seriousness, I have run the car out at second creek but not with PCA. I have just been out with open track days. My car doesn't fit any of the PCA rules. Also, I used to race a lot, but have stopped. However, I raced motorcycles. I was into first drag racing motorcycles and then started road racing them. I ran an F3 bike. What I learned about racing: it is VERY expensive (tires, entry fees, fuel, damage) and it is not a matter of if you will wreck, but when. So my rule of thumb only race what you can afford to break and wreck.
I bought that car about 10 years ago. I was young, just out of college and didn't have much responsibility. No more sports cars for me for a while. So I can't hurt this one. The wife just doesn't seem to see the same needs as I do. For example, I need a Garrett ball bearing GT turbo but the thing is the wife doesn't see that. She says it runs fine without it. It needs some custom chips to get some more power out of it. She seems to think it is just fine. Then she reminds me that it sits in the garage and if it get driven 10 times a year thats alot.
The only "sports car" I would consider at this point in my life would be a Cayenne (preferably turbo) but they are serious coin. I need a family car that is all weather for a DD. The fast SUV would fit that bill. It even can do mild off-roading (if one could stomach the body damage).

Ive had a motley collection over the years starting with a 45 flatty, couple of pans, 3 shovels, one old ironhead, and I dunno how many triumphs bsa's, and even a couple snortin nortons, and Ive owned some jap crap too, including a gpz750turbo, and a 750-4 honda chop with a 6 foot springer. Way to many scoots.. sold the last of my english iron 2 years ago to a board member here, and just hanging on to tis shovel,, I do have my eyes open for a knuck, never owned one, and would like to.
The current ride is a 79 bastard child, its an 80 inch but came with points, and misc. leftovers form the 74 inchers. its mildly built with an andrews b-grind, a S&S super G, punched out .30 over, and electronic ignition added.
Would like to throw some stroker wheels in it, but to many hobbies, not enough money to go around right now.

Wow! I just found out about the Sports Car/Hot Rod section!
I have owned and raced several sports cars with my latest being my favorite.
It started off as a bone stock 2001 Corvette Z06. I have since added: intake, lowered, High flow cats, long tube headers, underdrive pulley, TB, and a racing cam. Mod total sits me around 450hp and upper 11's on street tires at sea level. I haven't raced it at Bandi (don't really care to because of elevation), but have done several road races and Auto X's.
Just not very many places around here to drive it. :(

Was that a real time or estimated based upon estimated hp and weight?
A high 11 is like about a 13 second quarter mile at bandimere. That run may be a few ticks over 100mph at bandimere.
I don't see why you would not race it at Bandimere if you come and say how fast it is. The thing is you are running (or comparing times) that have the same elevation handicap as you do.
In general, and I am not acusing you of this, there are lots of people who have 10 second cars outside Bandimeres gates and somewhere they tend to gain 5 or 6 seconds by they time they make it to the track a few hindred yards away. One set of kudos I must give (and this is hard for me as I dislike vettes) is that for the most part vette drivers will flog the cars more than a lot of other makes and models. They don't tend to be the garage queens that some other cars are.

Guys driving around with driving gloves on in vettes.
They ride very harsh. Suspension actually works better if it moves some.
In general, I look at them as being exactly what they are. The sports car that the guy who wants a Ferrari buys and then thinks he has a Ferrari when he really has a Chevrolet.
I mean if you take a C5, it has inetrior components that look as cheap as an S-10. The window switches are the same as a $10K new car from chevy. They just feel cheap for the price range they are in.
Dollar for dollar, they are an excellent buy in PERFORMANCE. It just they lack the feel/charm/etc of other sports cars.

-Dana
I'm curious if you have ever driven a Z06? I only ask because what you say is what I hear from people who have never even sat in one. I have had an S10 in my family before, and I promise you, there is not a comparison to that interior vs. a C5.
Have you ever driven a Z06 around a race track? Is that how you know it is a good bang for the buck performance car? Or is that also what you have heard?
If you have driven one or raced one, then I completely respect your opinion and I take back all of my dick questions. I just hate it when people jump on band wagons when they really have no clue. I have been fortunate enough to race several high dollar sports cars, and the Z06 was the rawest of them all. Some people don't like that. But for me, it is perfect.
Regarding the ferrari comment, no one on the vette runs I go on aspires to have a ferrari. I wouldn't take one for the same price I payed for my Z. They just don't do it for me. Maserati is a poor man's ferrari.
Not sure why you went on the attack because I posted about my "other ride". I drag raced it at sea level, I choose not to drag race it at 6000ft. I don't feel like holding a 13 time slip. If you are affiliated with Bandimere, I apologize for hurting your feelings;)
In all seriousness though, if you have never had the chance to rip through the gears of a cammed Z06, we should meet up sometime. It is a flipping blast.

No. I have never driven a Z06.
But if you read my comments, I said that I don't like them not because of performance (if you note I said they are an excellent buy for the performance that you get for the money) I just don't like them becuase they don't have the same fit/finish/feel etc as other cars.
Now, I am not making any comments about a C6 cause I honetsly haven't even looked at them.
Seriously, go drive a Z06 down to the local BMW dealership. Compare the fit/finish/feel/charm to an M3. Next go to Audi. Compare the Z06 to a S4. Now while were at it, go compare the cars to a Cayman and a 911. If you are honest with yourself, you wil see that a Corvette is chevy quality. No more, no less. I put the fit/feel/finish of chevy's below honda/toyota/etc.
If I want a "raw" feeling (new) sports car, that simple. An Elise. If I want probably the best overall package, a Cayman. If I want the best bang for the buck a Corvette.

Obviously we disagree. No problem with that. I would encourage you to drive a Z06. It has nothing to do with its performance, it feels like a race car sitting at a stop light.
Have you driven a Caymen? I have. They are a piece of shit for the $$$$$. That's why porsche can't sell them. Check the numbers if you don't believe me. They have one at Lamborghini of Denver if you want a closer look.
The M3 was in the same price range as my Z, felt much more refined, but wasn't any faster than my modded 350Z. Which was a 13 second car at sea level.
The stock 911 TT was fun to drive because of the awd and boost, but you can't hear the engine and it was as smooth as my grandmom's lincoln. All that is fine if you are a cruiser, but I'm not. Even the GT750 I rode in (did not drive) beat the new Carrera GT (I have the vid on my desktop), but still did not have that raw sports car sensation.
I haven't been in an Elise, but I have heard they are on rails 24/7. I am a bigger fan of the Exige, just for the hard top I think.
Just because you dislike my car, doesn't mean there is a need to bash it in a thread for people to post their "other rides". ;)
DanaT
March 31st, 2007, 01:47 PM
I only said why I didn't like vettes after you asked. That is not bashing. If you read my first statement, I said that one thing I respect about guys with vettes as they will actually flog the cars and that was hard to admit since I don't like vettes. You then asked me why I don't like vettes. I then told you why. I also said they were a good deal performance wise for the money. How is that bashing?
I also stated that you should just run at bandimere as evryone has the same handicap. I don't see why you would be embarrassed, or not want to posses, a 13 second time slip from bandimere. If you can run 13s, that is very respectable at bandimere for a street car (especially using real street tires).
If one car fit everyone's taste, wouldn't we still be drivng a newer Model T?
As far as the elsie/exige, I wouldn't buy one. I am little biased against Lotus due to my friend talking about everything in the world has been invented by Lotus. Every other car company has "copied" Lotus. I must admit that his Esprit is a fun car though.

Cool cool.
Not embarrassed about even a 16 second time slip. I just worked really hard getting my car into the 11's and would hate seeing the slip :loco: I've been spoiled by growing up at sea level! I understand all N/A cars have the same handicap, and that is fine if you are racing the guy next to you, but I have always raced the clock (bracket racing). It is the only way I could tell if I am improving.
I'll probably bring my wife out this summer and teach her how to drag race. I got her into autocross and she is now pretty good! So I guess we'll see.
I wouldn't by the exige/elise either, but I bet it would be a blast to run it around a road track! I'm a huge esprit fan, but my understanding is that you have to be a self taught mechanic or a really rich to be able to afford everything that breaks.
I, like you, am very passionate about this stuff. So ignore me if I get ultra sensitive. I by no means think the C5 Z06 is the end all of cars and didn't mean to imply that.

My friends Esprit hasn't run in a year or more. He is always having to do something to it. The latest one is he took the engine apart for "preventative" reasons. Now he can't get it back together.
The car that I want is a 993TT. The 996TT is a better car, I just don't like the looks as well. The 997TT I would take though.
As for the Caymen not selling well in the USA, not surprising. They hit the market wrong. The price point is too near the 911. Porsche has a history of doing that. They bring out cars that more balances and could be faster than the 911, but they nueter the cars just enough so the 911 is still faster. The price point also approaches a 911. The Caymen would have worked at $50K with 300-320hp. But the problem with that is that the $50K car would have not been competing against a vette, but against the 911. The $50K car would have stolen sales from the $80K car.
Probably at this point in my life the only true sports car that I would (and could) consider would be a Carrera 4 (or better yet a 4S) that was a few years old. I can't pay $100K for a car. :( What I have to have in a car is probably 4 seats. A C4 barely fits that bill and all-weather capability. A true 4 seater is better yet. In reality the car that has by ineterest right now is the Acura TL. For some strange reason I also like the dodge magnum and the GTO. The TL is just a classy looking car.
As far as sports cars. The one I have I got a long time ago, and it will probably have to last me a long time. I used to be into the "race car" feeling, but sometimes nice, smooth and quiet is nice too. A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, I gave up on cars being fast. I gave up on that idea when I bought motorcycle.

It's my favorite because it's mine. There's a few other cars that I would love to have but it's great having a car like this that, for the money, is almost impossible to beat (not on the track but overall it's hard to get that much car for the money I paid).

That's funny!! Because there isn't one person that I know that owns a Vette the EVER wanted a over priced Ferrari. Including me.
It's about owning an "American" muscle car that will out perform most other sports cars on the road........and for half the price.
But.....to each his own....I wouldn't hold anything against ya. I'm not a snob, I love ALL sports cars....they each have there place.

C5 Z06 is a sweet ride. I saw your comments in the Tx Race thread- those races are Corvette heaven. Throw in a diff/trans cooler and off you go at 165 tech speed all day.
You can count the number of cars on one hand in the world that you could get in, drive 850 miles to the race, run in the 150 average class, drive 850 miles home, and not have to have "Luigi" or "Dieter", your Euro mechanic fix the pile when/if it gets home.
The C6 is the best one yet. Caution- don't go drive a new C6 Z06- you'll be addicted. They are friggin' amazing cars. They advertise 198MPH top speed- I know for a fact that they will do more than that, bone stock.
Your car is super nice. I dig it.

Metric 12.9 Bolts from McMaster Carr, for mounting calipers, should be showing up today... and I am a few days from having wheels and tires (actually dropping one wheel off at SpecWheels in Combat City today for refinishing).

Well settled on the Yoko YK420's in a 185/60 r14 for the daily driver treads, they are replacin the falken Ziex512's I had on them (worn to the belts). Plus since I have no PS, the 14's are a bit lighter to get a quicker turn.
15's I'm thinkin bout somethin more peformance oriented for when I really want to get on it, or if I decide to run some euro trash race.
