Shooting is one thing but practical shooting is a whole different animal.
I shot my first USPSA match today. It was a great time. It was a little stressful knowing I was moving, shooting, and reloading while 20 people were watching. I just tried to stay conscious of my muzzle and trigger finger and think about shooting the least.
On the fifth course I did pretty good and it started to feel normal. Except for the adrenaline rush still pumping through. I was told that doesn't really go away. :D
Time to relax...

I like IDPA better than USPSA.
IDPA has a lower round count but is little more "realistic".
The best thing is to shoot both. USPSA for the round count and fast fire drills, IDPA for the slightly more realism.
But, they are both games. That is one thing to keep in mind.

I haven't shot in a few years, but I remember my first match being the same way. It is definitely a great way to spend the morning. Enjoy.

Nice! I went to the Boulder Rifle Club Satuday to observe their defensive pistol matches this weekend. It looked like a lot of fun! Do you know how these compare to IDPA and USPSA? I noticed that they offer USPSA shoots in addition to the defensive matches so they must be kind of different.
Where did you shoot your USPSA match?

I've havn't been to an IDPA match yet. I think I heard that IDPA was product of USPSA shooters wanting more "practical" stages.
I went to the Weld County range for the match. There is a state organization for the local matches that reports to USPSA. The website is: here:http://www.ecouspsa.com/index.htm
You do have to take a safety class before you can participate in your first match. It's not that big of deal. They go over the rules, procedures, equipment, and let you practice drills to ensure you can be safe.
The Boulder USPSA match will be starting in March and will always be the 5th Saturday of the month. I'd like to shoot more than once a month so I will probably start going to Boulder as well.
I received the scores for yesterday. I placed 38th overall out of 46. Only two of us were 1st timers. This should give someone an idea that this sport isn't just full of professionals and that anyone can play.

Boulder has an 'indoor combat pistol match' this friday at 7:00 that I think me and a buddy are going to try and go watch. Let me know if you're going to try and make it - it's always good to have another familiar face (or screen name) in the crowd. :D

Well, according to their website, they have a limit of 1200 members and they've already met that limit for this year (2007). You're talking about Weld County Fish and Wildlife, right?

That's right. You don't have to be a member to shoot the public matches though. If you want to become a member you need to contact them to get on the wait list. It doesn't cost you anything and January will roll around before you know it. If you wait much longer this year you may not get in for 2008.

Steel matches rock. Is Bud still tearing everyone up with his revolver? I haven't been in a couple years.

I have not been yet. I've watched but not enough to know who is who. I'll keep an eye out for him. ;)
It looks like USPSA is Sun at Aurora. Not sure how much I can do but I probably won't make it to Boulder tomorrow night. I've got a new 2011 I just can't wait to compete with.
I'll post up tomorrow when I figure out what I will be doing. Maybe some of us can meet up at a match...

I'm definitely going to hit the Boulder match tonight. I'm 90% sure I'm going to give it a shot (albeit very slow), but this will be my first event so I'm going to play it by ear. I'll post up this weekend and let you know how it was.
FYI - The shoot tonight is a 'night shoot', with low light conditions for one stage and flashlight required for another.
I'm all for a 'meet and greet and shot' or 'shoot and then meet and greet' or whatever at some point.

That sounds like fun. Too bad I don't have more time...
I'll be at Weld County tomorrow for the steel match (action pistol). If anybody shows up I'll be the one driving a tan Ford F250.

Today was colder than ever. So cold that the grease on my 2011 thickened up so I had to use a backup. The backup didn't care about the cold grease. :)
It was pretty fun despite my hands stiffening up from the cold and wind. My trigger finger wasn't very flexible and I couldn't hit crap.
I met one guy from the board. Sorry I can't remember your user name. I'm not good at remembering names. It was good shooting with you.
How did the Boulder match go last night?

How did the Boulder match go last night?
The boulder match was a ton of fun! There were two stages, one involving low light and one having next to no light where a flashlight was required. I guess they change up the stages every week and run a three month cycle of easy, medium and hard, with this past friday considered hard.
For the flashlight stage you started sitting in a chair with your light in a desk drawer. The timer started and you went to the first area and identified the targets (from the cover of a wall) with your light, drew your weapon and fired on the targets. (four bad guys two good guys) Then you moved to the next area which had a doorway in it and repeated with bad guys and good guys in different configurations. Then you went to the next area where you stood in a box and had to shoot around a good guy that was close to you (maybe 1yd) and engage two bad guys down range. All targets were aprox 7 yds in distance. Fun!
The low light stage was a 'closed' stage so you couldn't see what was going on until you actually did it. You start by going through a door and down a short hall. Bad guys on right through a window. Then down the hall and to the right where you met two more bad guys. Then you take a right and enter a room with four more bad guys (again good guys dispersed throughout). Targets ranged from probably 9 yds to 4 yds. Again - Fun!
You received penalties for misses; -20 seconds(failing to put two rounds in the kill zone of the target), no-shoots; -40 (hitting the good guys), and procedurals; -60 (failing to use cover, engaging targets in wrong order, etc)
All in all it was a great time. I met a bunch of nice people that didn't take themselves too seriously. It was a long night though, as I didn't get out of there until 11:45 (got there at 6:45) - so five hours to shoot 50 rounds, but it was totally worth it. I will definitely be back next month!

That was me! No problem, I'm horrid with names too.

Uhhh... yea... it was the COLD... that was why I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. That'll be my story too! :D
