Anyone going to step up to the iPhone, or will you keep your Q,Treo, blackberry?? Right now it looks to only be cingular so I won't be changing over anytime soon. However, heres to hoping it can be unlocked. Then again $499/$599 is a bit much IMHO. Ill be interested to see just how well it works. Jobs seems to think a virtual keyboard is far superior to an actual tactile keyboard... Can't say I agree with him there. At least the phone looks neat.
Thoughts??

Yes, Yes it is. I just wish more would go 3G or 3.5G or even 4G like the rest of the world...
I only have a cell phone because my wife makes me carry one though.

I have iTunes on my phone, but I never use it since I have an ipod.
I am also currently with Cingular, but I was looking to change to T-Mobile on my bf's plan... I'll have to think about that since my bf would probably want this phone and have to be on my plan
And I would not like the keypad the iphone has. I sometimes dial without looking, so I need to "feel" where the numbers are on the phone

I say meh too... It was hard enough for me to part with $300 for one of these:
http://www.sonyericsson.com/images/spgd/GPD_40850_1500_0_4000.png
There will be an "unlocked" version, since that is how they come from the factory. Unless Apple and Cingular are in bed together, which I highly doubt. I have T-Mobile and purchased my W810i almost 2 months before Cingular even offered it, and as far as I know they are the only ones to offer it. Its unlocked and works prefect with T-Mobile. But $450 for a phone is just too much for me. Like most people who are into techie things, I already have an iPod and my phone will take upto a 4GB MSD card as well...

X2.
I just want a phone. I was forced to get a new phone a couple years ago, if I wanted to keep cell phone service that is. It was because I had an old 1986 analog only phone, that worked great. I hate this digital only crapola now and they have this bluetooth, MP3, TV, and whatever else in them now, and they don't work very well IMO for any of them, not even as a phone. Sound is bad.
Just give me a phone. Oh and one that has a ringer on it. Not some song from Tool.

The iPhone is basically a mini laptop with a cell phone feature. It is bad ass for how small it is, leaving MS in the dust. I sit at a desk all day long so it would be no use for me. Plus they say it only lasts 5 hours on a single charge (16 hrs for audio only). Hopefully that means 5 hours of constant web-wheeling and movies because if it won't last the day without recharge, I don't think it will take off like they think it will.

Yes, but no. Here's the problem...the Mac and Toy Fanboys/girls will go into debt to buy this new phone. But unless MS develops a pocket version of Word, Excel, and PPT (already in the windoze mobile 5.0) for the Mac and Toy Phone's OS - can you honestly see them doing that anytime soon, not me - to make it a viable threat to the Windoze Mobile and Palm/BB market that business/techie folks (myself included) are infatuated with.
I'm sure it's a cool device, and I'll definitely look @ one when they come out, but I will bet that I won't be getting one, mainly because my WM5 phone plays music and full length films just fine...I can even use my BT headset to listen to my music/movies. Oh, and I already have an iPod :D

Check.... Have been for a while now.
Ill pass anyway as I want an MS based phone myself, and my current DAP is just fine with 15gb of storage.
I also would prefer a tactile interface as I often dial by 'feel' as well. That will be a bit difficult to do without keys.

They are claiming that it runs OSX so I thought at first that you could install and run any compatible applications. Their wording is very sketchy as far as the capabilities and they don't have all of the specs listed as of yet. If sales happen take off like the iPod, then maybe Bill Gates will want a piece of the action.
All the power and sophistication of the world?s most advanced operating system ? OS X ? is now available on a small, handheld device that gives you access to true desktop-class applications and software...

Sorry, I don't see it putting a dent in the success of windows mobile. Palm, maybe, but unlikely. Their biggest issue is going to be one single carrier, and that is about the dumbest thing they could have done. There are TONS of people who wouldn't switch networks, Myself being one, whould would love the phone. Yes, you might be able to unlock the phone, but at $499/$599 its out of most peoples budget for a cell phone. Without the price benefits of service contracts it'll be $$$ for all but the true geeks.

but you all know what the deal will be right?
propietary formats, and yet another service to buy.
some one needs to do it the GNU way.some one needs to make the hardware, and then some one else the software, and let me utilise it as i see fit.let me use my format, use the service provider I choose.
and i dont mean as in let me copy for enyone who wants it,i mean as in let me use my property as i see fit,on any hardware i may desire to use.for me.

Itll be data service costs just like any other network/smartphone. And the only proprietary formats will be what already exsist with Mac OS X and itunes.

I use my cell phone for it's intended purpose.
I have a camera, a sound system, and a computer... and my computer does email.
I don't need my phone to do all of that, but I won't lie... it's nice to have gadgets and perks instead of "the bottom line."

Damage is already done, even if Apple changes the name, it will be known as the iPhone. Apple will pay and pay handsomely, they should have waited.

Not to sure about the TM being owned by Cisco (Linksys). Depends on how they took over that other company that had the name before. If they changed company names and someother legal crap, Cisco may not own that name, but they may too at the same time. The courts will decide.
Either way, I will not own one.

no need for one myself. Already have a WM5 powered phone that replaced my PDA. It also plays music, movies, etc and takes mini-SD cards. Oh, and it cost a fraction of the iPhone. Only grip is it is 2.5G and not higher.

Well we looked at them for some of our more trendy execs at work but the email services it provides was the deal killer, It uses Imap and POP3 so that means it has to pull email as opposed to the goodlink/blackberry push services. That is why the battery goes so fast.

How do you like Goodlink?
OrangeCrush
July 8th, 2007, 05:28 PM
When I worked at NASA we used goodlink and it has some great features but we use blackberry here in commercial sector just because the phone and server made by the same people RIM therefore you have more options in handset.
I recently got one of the new Blackberry Curves and I love it.
cheftyler
July 8th, 2007, 05:46 PM
Good deal, I'll have to recommend the Curve when it gets released for T-Mo to the one guy who is fed up with his 7290. We're way too cheap to purchase the Blackberry Enterprise server so we use the T-Mo Blackberry addresses and forward all incoming mail to those addresses. I'm trying really hard to convert everyone with BBs to WM devices but it's a tough battle :D

ok i have owned almost every pda phone since the kyocera 6035 and im not saying the iphone is better than some of the others out there but it for sure has a big wow factor and with a few hacks and some added software it will surpass the others quick. recently i have owned a samsung 8125 and a blackjack and now i have the iphone. the email is ok, the web browser is over the top now i can surf the web just like i was using my laptop. i have my tunes and movies and all of my notes. where it is lacking right now? no book reader, no gps, no video. however most of that can be fixed with software. it does have a cool map program, sms messaging, and everything is integrated and fast!
im good with it until the next version.

I've been in Silicon Valley for the better part of the past three weeks. A lot of people here have them, and love them.
But a drawback was causing a lot of ranting and raving this past week- not sure if it was just a local buzz or if people are talking about it all over the place.
Apparently, the user cannot replace the battery- it's soldered in. You must ship the unit to Apple, pay $86 and they replace it for you.
I'm admit I'm not techie at all, but WTF? Seems awfully obvious that's going to be a drawback and guaranteed to piss people off. Apple says it was an engineering decision and are trying to compare it to an ipod, saying people don't have an issue with that. Not a good comparison in my opinion.
It also seems like something they should have made clear BEFORE the sales began....:tisk: It wasn't even mentioned on their website until the Friday *after* the launch.
If you want to 'rent' a loaner when yours is shipped off for replacement, it's $29. They didn't even offer that until people started screaming, so it was reactionary.
Edited: BTW, Apple states that the iPhone's battery wil deplete itself after 300-400 charges. With all the functions of an iphone, I expect a lot of hardcore users will easily deplete their battery in less than a year.
cheftyler
July 8th, 2007, 08:00 PM
Wow...way to go APPLE! People don't bitch about the battery replacement on an iPod because you can change it in your home in about a minute. Wow...I knew they screwed up when they wouldn't release the OS to software developers and are forcing people to create programs that will run with Safari (web apps on a "smart" phone...c'mon Apple you're supposed to be more cutting edge than that), but they've done pissed people off now. So, providing the battery would last me all day (it won't just sayin) I'd have to ship my $500 or $600 phone to apple and pay ~$100 to have the battery replaced and then pay an additional $30 to "rent" a spare iPhone so I'm not phone-less for the week that it takes to get my chit fixed? Fawk me.
Dotcom
July 8th, 2007, 08:05 PM
and by the time these batteries need to be replaced there will be shops doing it for you local or like it was with the ipod people will be doing it at home. i remember when the ipod first hit they were saying the same things about the batteries and it has all worked out. heck by that time ill be on to version 2 of the iphone or whatever is the next big thing. i haven't kept a phone for more than a year yet.
cheftyler
July 8th, 2007, 08:17 PM
Good points, Dotcom, except that iPod batteries aren't soldered in, much less chance of farking it up when the battery is connected with a connector vs soldered...I'm glad you like it, I'm just sayin' that most people don't know how to properly solder anything, much less the power source to a $500 + phone.
Dotcom
July 8th, 2007, 08:30 PM
very true, im sure there will be computer stores etc to do that for most people so they don't have to send it off. on another note ive had my video ipod from day 1 (can't remember how long that has been but i know its been a long time) and it is still going strong so hopefully the iphone battery will hold up the same. im sure the est from apple is some legal cya.
