On our way back from Crested Butte on Sunday, Jen wanted to see the Royal Gorge. I warned her that I remembered it being kinda pricey, but she wanted to go anyway. So we went. $21/ person! But since it is the off-season, the second person was 1/2 price. We reluctantly paid it and wandered around the place for a bit. I still think the incline railway to the bottom is pretty cool. Used to go there a lot when I was younger, I don't remember there being an admission fee back then.

Ouch! I know this is a dated post but was researching royal gorge. Wanted to drive across the bridge with family on our trip next week. Do you have to pay the park admission fee just to drive across the bridge??

You have to pay to just walk across the bridge. You can't drive on it any more.

I don't believe you can drive across the bridge. You walk across, or at least out onto, it.

Or you can spend $50-80 a head and go whitewater rafting (a lot more fun than walking on a bridge) and see the bridge from the underneath.

When I was there last fall, you could drive across (pretty sure you still can). Then you turn around and drive back. Seems boring to do that. No extra fee to do it, and oversize vehicles are not allowed on it (RV's).

Royal Gorge Bridge

Hanging 1,053 feet above Colorado?s wild Arkansas River, the Royal Gorge Bridge is the world's highest suspension bridge and a legendary feat of engineering renowned the world over. Built in 1929 for $350,000, the cost today would easily exceed $15 million. But for those who venture across it, whether walking or driving, the experience is priceless.

You mean Nebraska's on the other side?

We went by a few months ago, same sort of deal. Just happened to be in the area and my kids had never seen it. We drove to the gate, and did a very quick U-turn when we read the prices. It was about 10 degrees with 30-40 mph gusts. Why pay to be tortured like that? At the east end of the parking lot, there's a trail that goes down to a place you can see the canyon and bridge real well from. We'll probably hit it some time this summer, but I about did a Fred Sanford when I read the prices.

I used to guide raft trips up and down the Arkansas. The Gorge is the best run I know of in the state when the rivers are down, but in June, Brown's Canyon between Buena Vista and Salida used to be better. That was before the drought the last few years, but this year I'm thinking it would be an awesome run. Several hours of non-stop rapids.

Same gig. Son wanted to see it on our way back from Canyon Truck. Drove across & back. Went to the overlook on the other side. Pretty cool view. Son walked back across the bridge and was freaked out by how much it swayed in the wind...thought it was a cool ride.

As it was winter (about 2 months ago) & nothing was really open but the bridge & animals on the other side, it was $10 for the both of us...

WHAT???!!!
That was about when I was there. Did the sign still say $21 when you were there? Another part of the reason we didn't go in was because all the other stuff was shut down. I couldn't see paying that much for just the bridge.

Steve.

You guys ever try to negotiate the admission price? I did when I was there a couple years back, they let me pay the cost of one person and 3 of us went in the car.

It's fun once or twice in a lifetime. Bit pricey for sure. Took the fam a few years ago because the then new wife and daughter had never seen it. I had fun. Almost lost my glasses over the side though...=( My daughter what 4 then and could see between the slats which scared the hell outta her.

Thats what I did. I was able to see it very good and get some great pictures of it. I couldn't believe they wanted you to pay outragous amounts to cross it, and it was only around $10.00 when I was there a few of years back. I still wouldn't pay it.
