View Full Version : Do You Wave?

I wanted to start a thread here since it isn't seeing a whole lot of action. When you see other bikers on the road do you wave at them? To me there is nothing more irritating than being 'left hanging'. I wave at ALL bikers. Not just imports, nor just American made. To me we are part of an exclusive club and we need to respect each other. IMHO

Jeepers need to wave at each other too.....

I used to wave at other jeepers until I moved here to CO and no one else does so I stopped. If I rode a bike Id wave though.

It's really kind of an interesting bit of social culturalism as to who waves to whom and who does not. I have five motorcycles and they are different "categories" of bikes.

I wave to everyone myself, but just for fun have been have been paying a lot of attnetion on how things differe depending on what bike I'm riding.

If I'm on my custom chopper it seems that everyone waves to me (except Goldwings or other tourers). The chopper gets the most attention and recognition by far. I've also had all manner of other bikes talk to me at stoplights, in parking lots and at gas stations. It's like everyone respects someone that gives at least the image of being a "real" biker.

I have a BMW touring bike. ALL BMW riders wave to one another, but not always to other kinds of bikes. The touring riders always wave to other tourers, but in general rarely to other styles.

On my sport bikes I always get the wave from other sport bikes and from probably 70% of Harley/Chopper riders. If I'm on a sport bike a touring bike will rarely initiate a wave. As a side not on the sport bikes...it's almost a game to be VERY deep in a corner and have another sport biker coming into the same corner from the other direction and see who has enough riding skill to be dragging a knee and still let go of the bars to wave. It's like you won a contest if you can wave to a sport biker in an corner and he's not able to return the wave.

On my dirt bike very few initiate a wave to me and people almost seem suprised to see me wave to them. I'll almost always get a return wave, but rarely will someone initiate it.

In general...by far the fewest waves I get are from touring riders. Dirt bikes seem to almost not get noticed, but will nearly always get a return wave. Sport bikers always wave to one another and get noticed the majority of the time by other styles. Chopper and Harley guys nearly always wave to one another, but will sometimes ignore other types of bikes.

I wave to every bike i pass as long as i see em. I feel bad when i am busy looking over my shoulder to see if i can change lanes and then when i look back there is a biker passing me waving at me and i didnt have time to wave back, haha.

I used to wave to all bikers, but got tired of being looked at funny. Now I wave until someone doesn't wave back and then I stop. Normally takes 1 bike to make me stop.

I ride a Sport/Tour bike, it's a Kawasaki Concours, I wave at everyone. It bugs me when they don't wave back, but oh well, life will go on. Anthony

I wave to all other bikes - even scooters! :)
If someone doesn't wave back, I try not to let it get to me, afterall, I don't know what's going on in there mind at the time. It is irritating to have another biker look right at you and not wave, almost on purpose, because I'm not riding the same kind of bike they are... This is usually the cruiser/Harley riders. That's ok - I'm still going to enjoy my ride!

the wave thing,, well I gotta admit, I wont initiate it, if someone waves, and its convienent to wave backI will, otherwise no,, I was riding long before the wave became popular, its still a somewhat recent thing, and you arent likely to see to many old school riders do it...

Just curious - since you were riding before the wave - when did it come about. I remember riders waving in the mid-late '70s, but that's as far back as I go... :)
Thanks!

I always wave. It doesn't matter what you are riding. It's the fact of riding on 2 wheels that makes me wave. If I don't get one back, no loss.
I also wave when I'm driving the Jeep-at other Jeeps of course.

Well, now that the riding season is beginning again I figured I'd revisit this thread. I was out a few days ago on one of the few nice days in the last few months and it seemed that everyone on a bike was waving to everyone else. I guess we were all pretty happy to be on the road again.

On a sportbike Ill wave if its safe. If Im in a turn. No wave, sorry. I need total control. If Im at a light with my hand on the clutch Ill nod, or the same if Im shifting gears. But I wave when I can. I dont wave to harley riders much anymore since Ive had a few waves returned with a finger.

LMAO
I have a Super Glide I will wave @ HD riders. Some times at other bike riders but I will not initiate at crotch rockets. They may or may not get a wave back depends on my mood (Leaving work or going to work).

Don't have a bike, but in my Jeep (JK Unlimited) I get a lot of waves from other JK drivers, but not so much from older Jeeps. Maybe they are just tryin to figure out what it is I'm driving :D

This past weekend I was driving around in Estes Park topless and door-less, passed another JK, and got a "Two fingers lifted from the steering wheel" wave from the male driver, and a "both hands waving wildly and grinning" wave from the female passenger :)
