I have been search quit abit for a round head light option and thought it would be cool and challenging to go the old school direction. I found two CJ grills and decided to make a CJ grill for the XJ. I still need to put turn signals in it but I am pretty pleased so far with the way it has turned out. It is definately a different look.

I have built some pieces that match the contour of the corner lights and have installed them. At this time I do not have pictures of the additions. The grill is at the point of final clean up and then paint. I will post pictures up when it is done. I have also decided to install a headlight conversion so the headlights are shallower in the grill along with the increase in light. I will keep you posted.

Cool idea. When you told me about it on Holy Cross I thought you were grafting a whole CJ front clip to the Cherokee. Now I get it!!! I caught a lot of flack about not having a round headlight jeep from the club I belong to. Good job!

Excellent work! I dig it. However, something about the color throws me off. I don't think it'd look right if the whole thing were painted body color, but the steel color it is makes it look kinda like an unpainted replacement piece. Maybe if you painted the ends body color to frame the middle? I dunno...even after attempting a crude MS Paint job, I'm not sure it'd look any different. see attachment.

Other than that, I think it looks cool. Reminds me of an old Waggy frontend (http://oldcarandtruckpictures.com/Jeeps/1966_Kaiser_Jeep_Super_Wagoneer-a.jpg).

I like it as well. I think the chrome corner lights throw it off a little. If you filled in the small ridge on the corner light so it was smooth and painted them to match the grill then it would blend a little better. Or fill the ridge and paint the corner lights and the grill the same color as the body. With chrome headlight bezels.

What do you think of it Tom?

Anything you would change or add to it?

I thought about painting the elevated portion of the grill orange to match the jeep and/or paint the carner light bezel chrome area the same silver as the grill and bumpers. I think it would not make the ends look out of place. If I made another one I would see if I could make the grill slot rails also match the shape of the corner lights.

I really like it. Thanks 87xjco for painting it for me. It's amazing what kind of paint job you get out of a paint booth rather than a garage.

I had an opportunity to take a good, up close look yesterday. The quality of work is top notch - including paint. The design is obviously a bit different and after years of looking at XJ's one way, this mod kind of gives the brain a nice little twist and shatters the status quo. I kept looking at the ends of the grill where they meet up w/the corner lights: I think a minor "something" can happen there, not sure what, but there may be an opportnuity to make that transition between grill and corners more fluid. That said, I like it just as it is and would be perfectly fine with it on our XJ, which will likely occur (wife wants it).

If anyone hasn't seen this rig up close, it's packed full of tricks; some visible, some not. I really like the work that went into the cage, quite artisitc and once again not what one typically sees.

Pleasure meeting you yesterday Tom - thanks for hanging until the wife got home to check it out.

September 15th, 2006, 06:42 AM
As I told Tom, I think it looks better the more ya look at it. When you first see it, it is so radically different that it is kind of a shock. When you do see it in person and not as a 2 dimesional photo, it does not seem to be such a huge departure from the overall look of the vehicle. I think Tom agrees it could use something on the corners to help the look and i'm sure he'll come up with something cool. Whenever you do a big change like this, your gonna have some people that hate it and some that love it. Doesn't matter as long as Tom likes it.

This sport is fueled by people who think outside the box and have the desire to do things differently, than everyone else does. I give huge credit to anyone that is willing try something different and does it with such good craftsmanship.:hail: :hail: Tom has certainly come up with the first grille of it's kind in an XJ. Maybe 10 years from now there will be many copy cats of the style, and we'll all be able to say that we saw the first one, and we knew the crazy genius that came up with it!!

I just figured out what is throwing me off about the mod... its the fact that the headlights are located in the middle of the grill, most of the jeep conecpts have the lights twards the top of the grill.. like these:

If you want the headlights farther out it will take three CJ grills unless you can come up with a way to widen each opening equally

Xota photoshoped an idea that we were throwing around what do you think. I think it keeps the silver grill color I like but helps the grill blend together with the Jeep.

The turn signals are in the corner lights. I had to modify the corner lights and add them there. I was going to put in LED's but the smallest one I found was 2" in diameter and would not have looked right.

Okay this is my opinion. Leave the grill painted to match the bumpers. I like the industrial look. The chrome corner bezels are what's throwing it off slightly. Get a set that is paintable but first fill in the ridge of the corner lights to smooth it out. That way there is no line that abrubtly ends at the grill. Then paint them to match the grill and bumpers. Call it good and post pictures.

I like it better with the orange around the outside of the lights.I also think it would look better with the lights out further. But like you said you would need 3 CJ grilles.Or you could add a solid flat next the headlight on the inside and keep the same num. of slots.

I think the reason it looked a little off to me was because the XJs are such a square vehicle and when you put a round headlight on it, looks a little different. It's growing on me tho, especially with the 2 tone paint like an FJ grill outline.
