So last week the remote to my Sony stereo system (roughly 10 years old) finally kicks the bucket. Very annoying having to get up from the couch to deal with it. I start looking for repairs/ replacements. This thing (obviously) isn't made anymore, so the few remaining specimens are pricey ($50 neighborhood). So then I start thinking about an all-in-one that will handle all of my A/V needs (4 devices). Searching around on eBay I come across plenty of Sony RM-AV3000 programmable remotes. Won an auction and it arrived yesterday. This thing rocks! Wish I had ordered one sooner. Curious what other people use, and how happy you are with it.

I may need one of those I have a Sony TV that is missing the remote. Thanks.

I was looking at one of those a few months ago. Since the kids have lost nearly every remote in the house that thing would take care of everything.

That's the other reason I wanted one. Can never find the one I need because of the kids (why do they need the tv remote in their rooms?)...

What all does/can it control? We have a Sony CD/DVD player, Sony receiver, JVC tv, and Comcast cable box. Oh, and some archaic VHS machine.

Info on what it supports is at http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-home.pl?mdl=RMAV3000&LOC=3

I know it handles more devices than I have.

I ask Brandon this damn near nightly.

I have had one for about two years, and have had no problems with it. It is capable of handling much more equip than I will ever have. The other thing I like is that it has a "superhuman" ability at sending its signals. I have run it while cuddled up under a blanket and the signal has still gotten to the device.

Not sure what they went for new (guessing $100-$150), but it was worth what I paid on eBay. I was surprised at how many are out there, and what the demand for them is. I lost several auctions before I figured out what they were topping out at, and bid in that neighborhood.

I use a Harmony 880 universal remote - you go online and download all the codes and it can control virtually anything. And you can program macros into it so it will do a string of commands. I love it!!!

I can't believe I went so long with having 8 different remotes.

Looks like a good device, but the cheapest I found it on Froogle for is $150!

Of course, Froogle has the Sony I got listed at $75, so maybe an 880 can be had cheaper on ebay...

I have a pioneer reciever that has a remote that learns or you can teach it. I had 9 remotes and I am down to 1 or 2 now that I use consistantly.

My wife got me the AV3000 a couple years ago for Christmas, and I agree that it rocks. Occassionally the cat will walk on the touch screen and hit ten different buttons - makes for an interesting guessing game trying to figure out what she made it do.

Printed off the manual yesterday - 107 pages! This thing can do all sorts of stuff. An auction I was watching on eBay last night wound up at $75! Glad I didn't pay that much for mine.

I need one with beeper capabilities, no matter how much I ask my girlfriend to not put down the remote wherever she happens to be (bathroom, kitchen, under the couch cushions), she still doesn't get that the remote belongs on the coffee table....argh!

Beeper would be cool. Can't tell you how many times 'Page' on the cordless phone base has saved us. Under pillows, under sheets in bedrooms, you name it, the phone has been found there.

Great, went from 3 remotes in my bedroom to just the one. Will be programming the rest of the TVs and accessories this weekend.

Oh, so you are keeping it away from the boys huh?

That things is definitely cool. Just need to learn how to adjust the tracking on the VCR with it...

And I wish it would work with the Xbox or PS/2. It might actually, I haven't tried. I have my doubts though.

I had mine programmed to control my roommate's xbox before I got married... You just have to "teach" it with the original remote.

I have a Sony TV that I paid $1600 for just about 18 months ago. Of course, the warranty is only for one year, so it's not covered anymore. The TV works great, but the volume button on the remote has completely quit working. So now we have to get up and go across the room everytime we want to adjust the volume.

What really pisses me off is that Sony refuses to do anything about it. I know that the warranty has expired, but DAMN! A well-made remote ought to last more than 18 months! I've spent thousands of dollars on their stuff over the years and they're willing to lose me as a customer over a remote that probably costs them $10 to make.

That's just stupid.

i've noticed sony home equipment doesn't work as well as their rep. holds their name to.

i've started leaning towards panasonic everything... cheap and indestructible

Got a new DVD player so the kids can use the Xbox elsewhere. No code for the Sony Commander, so I just went through the "learning" process. Worked like a charm. This thing kicks arse!

you should look into the harmony 880 (or 890 if you have the $$)

One question...

Can the Logitech or the Sony work a Harman Kardon AVR? I have had "universal" remote after "universal" remote and they ALL have failed to properly work my receiver. The Sony was the only one I ever saw that seemed like it might have a chance of working this thing.

If you have the HK remote and it still works, then I think yes. You put the two remotes head to head and teach the Sony by pressing which key you want defined to do something the HK remote does. This learning feature works great.

Not really - too lazy to reprogram it, and it's too big/clunky. Screen is hard to read too.

But don't tell anybody. ;)
