 Bill finally rolled. Boy - looking at that makes me very glad I wasn't there 'coz I got nervous looking at the pics. I'd've puked if I'd've been in the jeep. :D I see Bill has his helmet on - thank god! And it looks like no one got hurt yesterday. YEAH!

Wally - thanks for the great pics. I am sorry I didn't have the energy to drive over there.

Now - where are the stories!

Oh, there are LOTS of those. :D Bill's first words from underneath his overturned rig: Crap, my beer! :silly:

Had a great day with everyone yesterday, and as always, great pics Wally. And allow me to point out that 4 (out of 5) Jeeps broke, along with one Yota. The only 2 Fords drove out the top end, and the three oldest vehicles that started the day drove the entire trail. :cowboy:

Had a great time wheeling with everyone. As Steve said, us old Fords made it through! The single Jeep and Cruiser did a heck of a job leading us though! Its a heck of a trail, and I recommend it to anyone who has a capable rig. If not, it will bite ya. We took a few pictures as well, they are HERE (http://www.eddytech.net/Billings06/thumbs/generated.html)

Hope to get together and wheel it again soon. Bill (mountainJeep) left my house a couple hours ago, so you denver folks should be able to see his Jeep shortly!

Ill be working on all the video stuff today. Hope to get it online soon.

Great Pics!!!

I just got home, and would like to say thanks to all the GJ folks for hosting a great day on the trail. Some of you I met for the first time this weekend, and I gotta say, not a single jerk in the bunch (and thats saying alot since we spent nearly 10 hours on the trail and witnessed such breakage.)

Thanks to Clint and Dana for opening their home to me. You guys are great, and your son is awesome ( favorite two words: Bronco and Broken).

I really had a wonderful time wheelin with all of you, and will gladly make that drive again.

DOES ANYONE HAVE THE COUNTY DESIGNATION FOR THAT ROAD?

I am going to talk to my insurance agent tomorrow to see if its worth my while to make a claim for the damage. While it came out pretty well, there isnt a part on the exterior that isnt dented and scratched, or flat out destroyed. I am alsoo worried about the engine due to the massive oil seep into the cylinders and the hydrolock AFTER we blew them out.

Oh and I just read the EA and camping is allowed in the Bangs Canyon Management Area. Just not within 1/2mile of Little Park Road.

anyone who plans on camping must adhere to these prescribed rules:

Camp at previously used sites, if possible. Research studies have shown that the most rapid negative changes to soil and vegetation occur during the first few times campsite is used.

Firepans or stoves are recommended when camping on BLM. A fire pan is a metal tray used to contain a campfire and prevent the fire from blackening the soil (oil pans work great!). Before breaking camp, it is a simple matter to transfer cold ashes into a plastic bag or other container for disposal at home. If you use a fire pan carefully, it is possible to leave a campsite with no scars or evidence of your use. The use of firepans may be banned during high fire danger periods.

Avoid building new fire rings. Unnecessary fire rings scar the natural beauty of sites and reduce the amount of space available for sleeping and cooking areas.

Use only dead and down wood for campfires. Bringing your own firewood is the best policy to practice. Both dead and live trees add to the scenic qualities of campsites.

Do not put cans bottles or aluminum foil into a fire ring. These items do not burn, and their presence may lead subsequent users of the site to build a new fire ring.

Burn campfire logs to ashes, then douse with water. Do not smother a campfire with soil, as this will make it difficult for the next visitor to use the same fire ring. If you must leave a campsite before the fire burns all of the wood, douse the fire with water before you are ready to leave camp, then stir it with a stick, then douse it again to make sure it is completely out.

Dispose of human waste properly. The use of portable toilets is highly recommended. If no portable toilet is available, solid body waste and urine should be buried in a hole six to twelve inches deep. The disposal site should be located well away from streams, campsite, and other use areas. Toilet paper should be placed in a small plastic bag and put into your camp trash bag.

Pack out your trash (and a little extra). For years, public land managers have promoted the "pack-it-out" concept in an effort to foster self-cleanup ethic among public land users. This program has generally been successful. Most people no longer leave or bury trash at campsites.

You forgot to mention Our group of 3 Jeeps that "played through".

We made it through 3 for 3. Although we did have to stack quite a few rocks to get a set of 33's through the trail.
The only casualties were a drained battery, two blown fuses and a near explosion of a gas can( a 20' geyser of gasoline!!)

It was a good day and I'm glad I have decided not to sell my jeep anymore, instead I'm just taking it back to Texas with me.

First chance that I've had to check out the report. Yes I did break both axles. One going up, one coming down. Still drove home under it's own power. It was nice to meet a few new faces and I had a great trip with the whole group. As soon as I can find the cable for my camera, I will download the pics that I got from the trip.
As I was pulling the shafts this morning and watching the oil drain into a pan, I just remembered that I saw Mountain Jeep's(?) oil pan left on the side of the trail where he rolled. Black one with a yellow lid. Since I was already carting enough s**t down the trail and trying to get out in one piece, I unfortunately neglected to pick it up. 15 years of wheeling and I've used a trailer once. Some say I'm not wheelin' hard enough then...I say it's a daily driver and opinions are like a**holes; everyone's got one. Can't wait for the next one, and YES Wally I will be better prepared next time. That is all.

I've run Billings 8 times and this was the first time being broke, but when I broke I went big... broke two Grade 8 bolts off and the very crappy weld (not mine) on top of the steering box.

Luckily, I was able to quickly get down to town and in better cell coverage and find one for only $200. Chris and I ventured back out on Sunday AM and fixed my rig. GREAT THANKS TO CHRIS - COLORADO CRUISER! We've been friends for like 10 years and well, he is my kid's Godfather so go figure. :D

After further review last evening, it appears that the draglink and the tierod have been hitting on and off for some time, but only when the drivers side is stuffed up good. Just the right combo and that's that... I'll move the box forward an inch and then I'll be good. :D

Wally, Chris, myself and Steve were rolling thru the trail rather easy until... the carnage started and it was like cancer and spread like wildfire... I was pleased to see Clint skate thru after all the cancer had spread... and then I was LAST to break by the way... But break I did... and I was NONE too stoked about leaving my rig on the trail all night.

I was happy to see the ole Cruiser made the trip without a scratch. :hail:

I figured that probably added to the stress on it. Glad ya got it back in town. If you gotta leave a rig on a trail overnight, that's probably one of the safer ones to do it on - especially where you broke.

We gotta run it again together some time - and drive out the top. :D

YEAH, yeah... I know...

My TC is 4.7 to 1 now with 4.88s so 93 to 1. A doubler would help alot... :D

It's just a matter of money, right?

Don't ya love it when your buds pile on... can't you feel the love?
