Mark (XTJ), Jeff, Teron (HDK), Jeff (Hippie) and I headed south on Saturday morning to check out how the quiet town of Penrose was doing. It's quiet. Especially when you're the only group on the trail at Indy. We had 3 rigs: Fat Sally, The Rock Rat, and The Valtastrophe, and we managed to run the trail twice because we were the only group down there. Teron drove on the first lap, I drove the second - that trail is awesome. And I made it through with only one tug backwards!!! Indy hands down is more technical than any of the other trails I've been on. You have to pay attention, or you end up parallel parked at coffin rock or on your side before the a-hole like yours truely. :D
Jocko showed up half way through our first lap and decided to join in the fun for lap 2 to only have a centering pin on his drivers front leaf spring sheer off. Fortunately we had not dropped down the big waterfall and he was able to take Freedom out. What a great guy - we'll wheel with you any day Chad.

Here are a few pics from the day:

Mark took TJ the Yorkie (please feel free to make fun of the fact the yorkie is his wheeling dog); aren't they cute!

Mark dropping in on the second waterfall - we did manage to lift both 40's in the back off the rock upon landing - not a comfy feeling when riding passenger. My eyes went like this  even with sunglasses on.

To put this ledge into perspective for those who haven't been down to Indy before, here is Jaelyn infront of the rock. She is currently 43" tall and there is a good 24" above her head to the top of the ledge. Don't worry, the jeep isn't even running in this picture.

Teron and Hippie on the second part of the big waterfall:

Teron making sure he gives the poor Valtastrophe more body damage on the passenger side. Note the dent on the cowl on the drivers side - his fault too. :flipoff2:

Jeff did an awesome job at spotting us through the whole day. He wanted to show us what 6" the wrong way can do to you in the a-hole. The entire drivers rear tire has to be at least 7' off the ground. :D

Jeff had two breakages on The Rock Rat, one u-joint go on the front passenger side on his D44, then a clean snap of the shaft on the drivers front. Sucked because he wasn't even driving when the breakage happened.

But then Jeff did get to drive for a little while - he's an awesome spotter and did an amazing job all day!

Teron walked up coffin rock on the right line, and made the exit look like it was nothing - show off. But he was the first one in our group....

Now for lap 2 - my turn to drive!!
"What! There's another ledge!!!" Hippie is riding shotgun with me, and Jeff is spotting me, and my eyes are like this  again.

Right about here I decided this wasn't the most comfrotable ledge I have been on. Too late, had to go with it.

but I made it!

how much of an angle can you have before going on its side???

Thanks Jocko & Jeff for saving me! Teron was going to let me go over. :P

Coffin rock = arch nemisis. I pinched the front axle in so tight on coffin rock, and managed to get sideways in the process that I needed a tug backwards to become un-stuck. Stupid rock.

I did make the exit - after a good bump or 4 up the last ledge. Mark in Fat Sally had managed to move some of the rocks around that were on the big shelf - ok - 40's and a skinny pedal move rocks pretty easily. The second round was a bit hairy to get out the exit on. Plus it had sprinkled a bit so it was a little bit slick.
Hippie was brave enough to ride shotgun while I tackled the exit.

There used to be a rock where my right rear tire is at, but Fat Sally moved it on the first lap.

Mark came throug with Fat Sally and almost made it but he needs limiting straps on the front end; it just kept lifting up. So to be safe he had the winch pulled, then drove out.

Jeff's buddy who was driving his rig got all fubar'd on the exit, but Jeff did an amazing job of spotting and they made it out with some help from a line as well.

We were down there too, but not having been there before, we got a little lost and ended up in the bottom of creek bottom running from N to S. Then my buddies YJ busted a rear axle shaft, so after we repaired that, we called it a day. I think we saw you guys back in there as were leaving. I was towing the black YJ and my buddy was driving his green YJ.

Anyways, that is an awesome trail, and I will be back down there again sometime soon. If anybody is going down on a weekend, let me know...

nice to see Jeff is doing well:) I haven't seen him in a while. I remember a trip to Montrose when the rock rat was still in one(sort of)piece:)

Ya you do, but I've seen how you drive so you better bring spares - even for the D70. :flipoff2:
Get your junk back together and lets do it!

How would a TJ w/ 6 and half inches of lift and 35's do on patriot? Body damage, roll, alot of dragging? Im planning on running at least liberty this weekend with the club. Patriot definitely does sound tempting but this is my DD.

Need a good spotter. Of course I would say this with any full body rig.

also bring spare axle shafts in some places the wrong line and you will definetly end up in a pinch.

X2 on the spotter - also expect body damage

If you are really super careful you won't get body damage. I'm told that a group of XJs and one MJ made it through last year with no body damage, but they did take straps now and then to pull them away from the rocks.

Nice description to go along with the pictures, Val.

I think you probably have a new found appreciation for people trying to get a full bodied rig through there. It's tough.....

Good times, even though I had to bail up Freedom. Got the centering pin fixed the other night. You guys are alright in my book, I don't care what Wally says about you in his PMs :flipoff2:.

We should plan a trip to Carnage B.V. soon :D

Only pic I have

Nice pics! Makes me really want to try that exit now. We were hoping to make it down there this weekend but as of Friday, the gate was closed.
