Many thanks to soundman for the help....

Next comes the buggy spring rear suspension.

Looking good!!
So what size of tube did you use on the cage? I know most people use 1.5" on the Sami's so you can get it to fit between the dash and door.
That is our next project on Patrick's Sami....

Sorry Clyde but the Runner is spoken for by my brother in law, but here is a couple teasers.

And yes there is a 6-pack under that air cleaner sitting on top of a 440.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y125/Rimmer02/IMG_0803.jpg

The tube we used was 1.75 and the doors barely fit, we still need to do some of the re-enforcement work and a little more gusseting but the major stuff is done.

Hope to have it on the trail by the over 40 run that DaJudge is throwing together, but still have a long way to go.

Getting all of that to fit up tight on the dash, inside the "targa" and make it so the doors would close was a PITA! With all of that in mind the windjammer and the soft top still fit and work as well as the stock winshield supports and mounts. Now we have to get it running and the rear suspension done. While that is going on I have to put a cage in my TJ, re make my links for my sway bar, re-hang my fuel cell, make another set of flat fenders (FOR MY RIG, don't even ask for em), I have 3 different diff guards to make, finish the cage in another TJ, there is something I am supposed to do on mulchers rig, mpmoe needs some repair on the comp cut that was done on his.
I think I am going to break down and open a shop soon.

Some new pics of the Squirrel after it was put back together...

Still have the rear springs to do and push the axle back 10" but for the most part the majority of it is done.

Time to wheel it :D

Kirk, the sami looks good. Now just get that darned roadrunner out the shop so I can park my junk in there and get my frame up done so I have a chance to wheel it before I move to GA.

Yeah, they are 33's

I am thinking tax check or bonus next year will be a winch and 35's or bigger on bead locks.

I just can't seem to find any extra money laying around after payday right now. :)

Did a bunch more to the squirrel. almost ready for the wheeling season.

Decided to get it ready fast instead of doing the 4-link. Instead I installed a couple XJ springs I had laying around,
flipped them backwards and installed a front driveshaft on the rear.

It couldn't have worked out any better, 1-inch spacer and everything bolted on. What it did is move the rear
axle back 10 inches and eliminated the need to carry 2 extra driveshafts on the trail.

Only thing I have to do now is design and install a traction / antiwrap bar on the rear axle to stiffen it a little.
Then the stinger, 35's, and winch and I will be ready.

Here's a few pics...

Before...

After.....

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y125/Rimmer02/100_0218.jpg

Note where the old shock mounts and bumpstop are, and how much it moved the axle.....

My fab work frame exentions.....

And the completed work with the rear bumper.....

More pics to follow after the stinger work, winch and tires.... Shakedown run coming real soon to either Indy or Eagle Rock.

Did you mean XJ springs?Better get a traction bar on it.Looking good though.

Rimmer
March 11th, 2007, 08:26 PM
Um.... yeah that's what I meant

And I plan on putting a traction bar on it, just trying to decide on a design right now.

Will have to fab the whole thing as I haven't really been able to find anything on the web that is prefab or bolt on for a sami with yota axles and XJ springs.

I'm open for design ideas...

Really nice lookin rig!

Got done with the majority of the traction bar today.

Until I ran out of welding wire.

It is from a design I found on the web, and I am pretty happy with it so far.

Hope to have the rig done by the old fart's run, but it will be close.

and here are the pics.

Pic # 1 = the truss and mounting tabs.

Pic # 4 = Link mounted to axle.

Pic # 5 = Closeup of some of the reinforcment welding i did.

Pic # 6 = Shackle hooked up to crossbar.

Pic # 7 = From a different angle.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y125/Rimmer02/P1000118.jpg

I still have to brace the crossbar, but ran outa wire.

I liked the writeup I found on jeepaholics.com which is where i found this design, I just had to modify it a little to work on a toyota axle.

Original article is here. http://www.jeepaholics.com/tech/bambar/

I really didn't want to weld on cast and found a way around it.

Hope it works.

Ok, shakedown run made.... List of things to do.

1. Replace broken transfer
2. Replace wimpy fuel line that burst twice.
3. Finish wiring and clean up existing wiring.
4. Fix stereo.
5. Start saving for hydro steering.
6. Fabricate Z-link.
7. Replace front driveshaft with CV joint style shaft to correct angle.

Got to the first hill on OCG and pow.... broke front transfer output shaft. Vibrated like hell, but the traction bar worked great.

Back into the Garage it goes.

You still made it pretty far for only 2Low, before we decided to turn around. Probably coulda done the whole thing. But I must say the squirrel looks a hell of a lot better than it did last year.
