View Full Version : Narrow XJ front

Well I thought I would go ahead and narrow the front of the old XJ at the same time I convert it to 1 ton running gear. I was really tired of hitting crap with the nose every time we went out! Solution....full width 60/14bolt combo and a 44" wide nose. Here are some pics of it so far. I only have it mocked up with duct tape to take measurements for the tubing/plating that will be supporting the entire front, air shocks and winch.

My brother came over and helped me lift up the 60 so I could get an idea of the wheel base. Here it is at 107".

Are you gonna put anymore lift to it?

Are you gonna extend the cage down into the engine compartment to replace the strength you cut out of the wheel wells?

The like the back end.

I was really tired of hitting crap with the nose every time we went out!
That's why I narrowed the front of my EB; it couldn't have been the driver. :spit:

I've never seen this done to an XJ, it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Thanks everyone!

It helps to hear good feed back when the project starts to bog down. I am going to run front strut bars from the A hoop to the top of the unirail triangulated along the way. Front suspension will be a 3 link/panhard supported by Fox air shcoks. I also am going to plate the front portion of the frame with some 1/4" steel. The strut bars will be tied together at the fire wall and behind the front header panel just in front of the radiator. I am also going to tie the front spreader bars to each other with a removable V front to rear over the engine. The winch will be mounted under and behind the grill and protected with a MINI stinger. No huge dongs on the front of this rig!

Yeah it may have been the driver alittle in my case! But the old BPI bumper could just pwoer through so I let it.

That whole setup is going to be sick when you're finished.

Are you going to pull the fenders in at the grille and leave them full width at the rear? If so, here's something to keep in mind from someone who's done that: when you narrow the front that way, it also shortens the front a bit. I took 8" out of my grille when I narrowed the EB, and that shortened the front end by about 3/4 of an inch. Not a big deal? I had no problems with fan clearance or anything in the engine compartment, but you should look at that. Also, you either have to shorten the hood (lots of work) in addition to narrowing it, or leave it a bit too long and figure out how to latch it.

I chose not to shorten my hood, and ended up with hood pins to latch it shut instead of the factory latch.

Yep, I have a 3/4" difference at the hood and fender point. I expected that and I have been undecided over making a new aluminum hood with dzus fasteners for hold downs or adding to the fenders. Once I installed the turbo the D30 decided it wasnt very happy! Jeffro600 was the poor guy that fished the other end out. I decided I didnt have the desire to dig into that one.

Yeah, it wasnt pretty...the peice of shaft that was broken off made that carrier a REAL bitch to get out....and the carrier bearing on that side was grenaded. Wasnt pretty to say the least....but after a set of bearings and a new shaft, it works great.

Thanks! I hope I can keep up since you guys are all runnin the sweet buggys these days.

I hope to have the front tube work all fitted and tacked this weekend(pics will follow). Then its on to the 3 link and steering. What are you guys going to run for up travel in front? I am thinking 5"s on 14" air shox.

I think 5" up travel is about right providing you have enough oil in the shock. I was shooting for 5" on 14" AS but right now I'm closer to 6" or 7" becasue I didn't put enough oil in. Just can't find the time to make the change.. Looking SWEET!

I have gotten the front tubing bent and tacked on and the beadlock inner rings welded up. The outter bead lock ring are off getting polished and I am currently designing the new dash. I ripped ALL the old dash out to get access to the front hoop of the cage to tie the engine cage to. I have a few more bars to add to the engine compartment and the winch craddel to make. I will get some pics up as soon as I get a new camera(my old one took a drop in the garage)

Been alittle too busy with the jobs and all to get much done lately. Here is how it is sitting now. I have a couple more bars on now that arent shown. There are 2 bars on each side running from the upper strut bar down to the frame. I burned up an entrie day just taking out the stupid dash. I should have the tires all mounted and the front tubing complete this weekend. Ill get some more up to date pics if the camera works. I havent seen your rig Kirby...sounds cool though!

cagedxj
March 29th, 2006, 07:36 PM
I have never found a need to fold the windshield down... must be me. Here are some actual current pics. I still need to mount the winch and fab the shock hoops and bridge. Then its on to the reality that I have set the ride height too low for the wish bone 3 link I want to run. I am starting to think why am I doing this when I could have built a tube buggy and been wheelin already. Oh well no one will have a rig like it!

I am kind of at a crossroads here. I finished the DIY beadlocks I made and started laying out the front suspension to find that at the ride heigth I want(pictured) The front tires will eat my fenders due to the big back space wheels at steering lock and full compression. I dont really want to "flat fender" it but I really dont see a way around it. Here are some pics to show my 'considered' fender cutting. All the mods are mocked up with colored tape just to help visualize. Open to any other ideas around this fender problem.

I think it looks good with the "flat fender" look. I say go for it....I'd hate to see you compromise ride height too much to avoid it. I think you'll regret that later....as opposed to regretting trimming too much.

cagedxj
April 2nd, 2006, 11:19 AM
I think I will end up cutting it. I have been kicking around the idea of making my own fenders up front and tapering the section under the strut bar in torwards the radiator. But I really dont want to have to make custom fenders....I am running out of time.

Oh yeah I am cutting your beadlocks this week Brian!

Yes. I've got the allied bead locks, but I don't like the small outer rings, they seem to flex too much when I torque them down to only 13#. Do you make the outer rings out of aluminum or steel.

WELL.....to bring a thread back to life. I have finally gotten all the numbers to work out 'close' to what I was after for the front suspension. I still have to drill and tap my drag link and tie rod, mount the winch and fab driveshafts. Finish the dash/floor and redo the exhaust. It is kinda weird...all that work and it looks just like the mock-up pics. I guess thats the point of the mock-up stage but I was hoping for a bit of a difference. This will be the last 'version' of the ol XJ. Any more and it really isnt an XJ.
