Eric,
Is it just me, or is the amount of swearing and profanity on the board increasing? Is there any way to tone it down without becoming big brother type censors?

Not that I'm a prude or anything like that, I use that kind of language myself. But I just joined this board a few days ago and that is the one thing I really noticed. A lot of profanity and a lot of flaming. I heard about this board on another that I visit and post to several times every day and the comparison between the two is like night and day. That kind of stuff is absolutely not tolerated on the other board. Some policing would be in order I believe.

A lot of the guys on this board are also on PBB. If you think this place is bad, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT check out The Pirates! www.pirate4x4.com (http://www.pirate4x4.com) .
Oh yeah, this site is piggy-backed on PBB's server.

Yeah, been there a couple times, enough to know that's not the board for me. Just hoping this one doesn't turn into the same.

Well, I was kinda hoping people would realize they're being offensive and police themselves.

I'm not trying to dispute anybody's right to swear, this IS America after all. Freedom of speech is one of our most basic rights. I'm not asking Eric to censor every post and make sure none of those swear words ever slip through (notice that I asked is there a way to tone it down WITHOUT becoming Big Brother).
But just because we have a right doesn't mean we have to exercise it every chance we get. To those who like to exercise this right I'm just politely asking: please, can you be considerate of those of us who are more sensitive and be a little more judicious of your use of that right?
As someone already pointed out, there already is POR if that's really what you're in to. Now, this board certainly isn't mine and I'm not trying to control it. If you all want it to become another POR, that's fine but I have really enjoyed the exchange of ideas here and have learned a lot from the oustanding expertise of the members of this board and would loose that enjoyment if it becomes another POR, that's all.

So...because every now and then someone says "crap" this board isn't as informative as one that doesn't allow any cussing?
I think this board has the perfect balance of speech. You normally only see the cuss words when people are exasperated. Just like in "real" life. If you don't like it don't participate in the cussing. We are all adults here...and sometimes a situation/expression/feeling can be best described by using a "cuss"word.
Who get's to decide what's a cuss word anyway. They are just words like all the other ones...and like it or not they will be incorporated into the "formal" language as time goes on just like all slang/cuss word have in the past.
To put such high emotional/moral value in a word seems silly to me. If we are gonna condem a word or phrase I think it should be "cotter pin". Everytime I hear it I get mad! I want mom's to scold thier kids for saying it. It all stems from when I was putting in a c@tter p!n on the drivers side tie rod. Longstory short, like an idiot I smack myself in the head w/ the open end of the wrench I was bending the cotter pin with. GOD...I friggin hate cotterpins! ....but that is just my own irrational response to my stupidity.

How about "cotter key", doesn't that just grind your melon HIX?? Anyway, I don't mean to offend anyone, just being me, and hey who knows, maybe we'll meet out on the trail one day, and my language just seems to come out, again, not trying to be offensive, just not that good yet at toning down my expressionism, but if not for you, I definately need to work on it for my kids. My daughter catches me all too often and sets me pretty straight!! I am still going to be using these cute little gremlins tho!!
