View Full Version : New feature: Images below your name
Eric
September 19th, 2001, 05:05 PM
We now allow you to display an image below your name in the forums. To do this, simply edit your profile and you'll see a new field where you must specify the complete URL to the image (including the http:// part). Feel free to use our upload feature to store your image here at CO4x4 (upload feature is accessible thru the Post or Reply functions). If you do not wish to display an image then simply leave that field blank. To edit your profile, simply use the "Edit Profile" link in the navigation menu to the left.
Some restrictions
The image should be 100x100 pixels. If you use an image that is a different size it will automatically be shrunk / stretched to 100x100 and this usually results in an ugly image. The size you choose is entirely up to you, I'm simply explaining what "looks best"

Your image can be no larger than 5k. If you use a larger image and we catch you, we WILL delete it. Keep doing it and you're outta here. Images larger than 5k will noticably slow down the load time for posts, especially for those of us on dial-up, and thus will NOT be tolerated. Blatant, widespread abuse of the size restriction will result in the termination of this feature.
If you have any questions about how to resize or crop an image, just ask (preferably in the General Chit Chat (http://www.colorado4x4.org/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum&f=7) forum) and we'll be happy to help you out.
If you have any questions about this feature, feel free to reply to this news post.
For reference, the URL for flag that I'm currently using is as follows: http://colorado4x4.org/uploads/old_glory.gif
If you'd like to use this image, simply copy the entire link and paste it into your custom image field

Your image link doesn't work. I suggest uploading it to CO4x4 and link to it here. You'll have to correct the file extension so that it's either .jpg or .gif, whatever that image really is (you have it as .txt I'm guessing to get around geocities' policy on sharing images? It's probably a .gif though right?). Also you'll want to correct the size or it'll get hosed when it's stretched to 100x100. Or just email it to me and I'll fix it for you smilies/thefinger.gif

Eric, my little Jeep image to the left is about 5.4k... is that going to be a problem?

How about this one? It's just under 5k (technically 5k = 5120) :

I highly recommend the products from http://www.xat.com/ I've used their JPEG Optimizer countless times and I just used their Image optimizer on JT's pic above. If anyone is struggling with size limits it may be worth a shot. Animated gifs are another story, those will be quite a challenge to get under 5k and still be any bigger than the bunny above.

Only temporarily "out of service". I just need to add it to this new BB software. Hopefully I'll get a chance this weekend, there are several other "enhancements" that are currently missing as well (Recent Topics on front page, stars/ranks, member list, etc. etc. etc.). All will be restored asap.

Gonna need more info than that. Sounds like you scanned the image and saved it to your disk but now can't find where you saved it to??

You can use IrfanView to resize your pics. You can download it for free of the web. I don't have a link, but just do a search. Once you get it, if you resize your pics to 100x100pixels or less, that should be the right size for the image under your name.

Egads, don't use a .bmp format. That file format results in a huge file size compared to .gif or .jpg which utilize compression. Thus you'll notice (in the Upload form instructions) that only .gif and .jpg extensions are allowed to be uploaded to CO4x4. Use your photo software to save the image as a .jpg and then upload.
FWIW, the upload utility verifies file size and format at the completion of the upload and before it writes the file to the upload section. At that time you'd receive an error message if the file was too big or if you tried to upload a file with an illegal extension (such as .bmp). The larger the image size and the slower your internet connection the longer you'll have to wait before receiving the upload confirmation or error message.
