Well I had the opportunity to ride with some heavily modified rigs this past Saturday on some trails about 1hr and 15mins. south of Albuquerque off I-25. The area is fairly new and is a BLM designated OHV area. Many local clubs have helped map trails and get the area open to OHV use. The pics I have are probably of the hardest trail in the area. It took us 4 hours to take 2 vehicles 100 yards. Carnage for the day included:
2 blown tire beads, deep sheetmetal scratches, bent 1/4" steel bumper, bent fender, broken tail light, 1 warn premium hub and 1 superwinch hub. The hubs both broke on 2 different vehicles in the same spot on the same side. Alot of winch line was pulled and 2 Ramseys got a very good workout.

THE PICS (http://photobucket.com/albums/b141/Brian4x4/Gordys%20Hill%20Oct%2029%2005/) Note: the pics are in reverse order for some reason

My ride for the day was the blue Tacoma. Specs include: bobbed and boat-tailed bed, SAS, 200+:1 crawl, 37's, internal cage and F&R lockers

Brian, I don't notice you in any of the pictures riding in a vehicle. Are you sure you didn't just walk along and take pictures?????? :P

LOL, you got me Perry. I did walk most of the waterfall sections to get all the pics. My leg muscles got a workout climbing those water falls a few times. I also pulled winch cable. I did ride through alot of the stuff though :D

I spend several weeks every year in Socorro. I'm assuming these trails are near there in the Quebradas... Is that right?

Nice pics. Looks like a good time. Aprox. how big would you say the OHV area is? Multiple trails? Worth driving nearly 8-10 hours for say a weekend of wheeling?

Hey guys! This is my first time to post! Brian, I too live in ABQ and I have been going to Moab for my adventures, but the 6 1/2 hour drive is a bummer. Where is this wonderful spot that you have found off of I-25? I would love to have more info about this. I have a stock Rubicon, soon to be modified. Would I be about to make the trip?

I believe so, it is a little north east of socorro just over the river.

I really dont know the specifics of the area. Yes there are multiple trails in the area. The pics are of one of the hardest trails. If you like this type of terrain then yes I would say it would be worth driving down. Terrain is mostly canyons with various rocks and waterfalls. Camp there or get a hotel in Socorro. I would wait untill this time next year. Trail building is still on-going. If I can find more info I will post it. The area is called "Gordy's Hill"

Welcome to the site! There are a few of us from NM on here. It is a few miles north-east of Socorro. There would be alot of stuff that a modified Rubi could do however I have really only seen that one trail. There is an upcoming trip to the area to do some trail building this weekend or next, I dont remember right now. Look on www.nmvjc.org board for more info.

I heard a rumor that there is going to be an event over Thanksgiving weekend at this area and Walker Evans is supposed to be there. Not 100% sure however.

Found some info here: http://www.nm.blm.gov/recreation/socorro/gordys_hill_ohv.htm the directions are to get to the staging area however for the good wheeling you take a right at the t-intersection and look for the trail markers.

Napoleon - 6,000 acres

Please let me know if you hear any more about the trail building or the event over Thanksgiving weekend. Again, thank you for the help. If you know of any other good places to go are any good places to get info about trails, please let me know. I never know that we had such places in NM!

It made it all the way to the ledge but he decided to not try it and turned around and went back out. I missed a great shot of the IFS toy doing an obsticle where he had about 5' of air under the right front tire. If he would have had better rock protection (sliders, bumpers) he could have done the ledges. It was locked front for sure and I think back with ARB's.

Okay Nov. 12th weekend is on the calendar for trail building. Meet at the staging area which the driving instructions are in the BLM link. 9AM. I dont think I will be going to that but if you want you could meet others there and probably hitch a ride or take yours depending on the trails they will be doing and working on.

There are plenty of trails around. For more info and meetings look at www.nmvjc.org and www.nmwheeling.com
NM wheeling is more family-friendly than NMVJC.

Isn't that the area New Mexico Four Wheelers just finished devolping? I nbeed to make it down there also. How about a long weekend in New Mexico for the Colorado folks :bounce2: Come to Farmington first and I'll show you all the fun stuff, then the group could go to the Albq area. Maybe a late spring trip?
